GEORGE TOWN (June 16): The Malaysian Association of Amusement Theme Park and Family Attractions (MAATFA) has high hopes that theme parks in Malaysia will be revitalised when they are reopened, as there is a great demand from the public to visit such attractions.

MAATFA president Tan Richard Koh cited the reopening of Shanghai’s Disneyland Theme Park as an example, saying it succeeded in garnering up to 5,000 visitors daily, as well as the scheduled June 18 reopening of its branch in Hong Kong.   

“Seeing how other attractions, like the Penang Hill, have also successfully attracted many visitors since their reopening, it is very encouraging to see (theme parks being just as successful),” he told a press conference at the Escape Penang Theme Park in Teluk Bahang here today.

He said Malaysians would definitely want to go out and enjoy the outdoor nature, especially after staying at home for months in compliance with the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

He hoped that the Federal government would allow the reopening of all theme parks and attractions nationwide soon in compliance with the proper standard operation procedures (SOPs).

Earlier, Koh, Penang executive councillor for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage Yeoh Soon Hin and Escape Penang founder and chief executive officer Sim Choo Kheng visited the theme park in Teluk Bahang for its reopening today.

According to a statement today, the Resorts World Genting (RWG) will reopen at 10am on Friday with enhanced safety measures in place to ensure the health and safety of all its guests and employees.

However, due to limited capacity, GENM said entry to SkyCasino in SkyAvenue and Genting Club in Genting Grand Hotel will be only for Genting Rewards members, adding that public entry into the casino will resume as soon as possible.

The Awana Skyway cable car and Genting express buses will also resume operations, said GENM.

“RWG has re-engineered its processes and developed a comprehensive safety plan in line with the government’s guidelines and global best practices. The RWG StaySafe Promise, which outlines RWG’s enhanced safety plan for the resort, includes protocols that cover social distancing measures, enhanced cleaning and disinfection processes, as well as the deployment of service ambassadors among others.

“Service ambassadors are specially trained customer-facing employees who will assist and guide returning guests on the resort’s enhanced safety measures,” it added.

Moreover, RWG has implemented MySejahtera Check-In at all its primary entrances and outlets throughout the resort. Thus, guests are encouraged to download and register the MySejahtera application prior to their visit to RWG for convenient access to the resort’s premises.

Yesterday, GENM had announced that the casino and hotel operator's Resorts World Kijal and Resorts World Langkawi are set to reopen tomorrow (June 18).

Shares of GENM closed 14 sen or 5.38% higher to settle at RM2.74 today, while its parent Genting Bhd closed up 17 sen or 3.93% at RM4.50.

GENM’s market capitalisation stood at RM15.49 billion while Genting was valued at RM17.33 billion.
