The southern African republic of Malawi has no known oil or gas reserves and consequently no upstream oil industry. Its downstream oil industry is wholly dependent on refined petroleum products imported from neighbouring African countries. The Malawian oil industry is regulated by The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs. The current Minister of Energy Afffairs is Hon. Harry Thomson MP.The downstream industry is wholly dependent on refined petroleum products imported from its neighbours. Oil-derived products supply 74% of the country's commercial energy needs. The market exceeds 20,000 tonnes per month. Legislated changes being implemented to split the mid-stream from downstream industries. The Chirimba distribution depot is currently under construction. The distribution infrastructure consists of road and rail systems all in need of upgrading and repair. There are 17 storage depots. A matter of concern to the government is the smuggling that takes place on the border with Tanzania. A single pricing formula exists for all products which determines the maximum price that can be charged. In 2003 Energem Resources Inc. secured a 12 year oil importation licence to import refined products to Malawi. The company was awarded rights to build, own and operate a 70,000 cubic meter strategic oil storage facility, and pipeline from Mozambique to Malawi, to replace road & rail transport. CITAC was appointed as the engineering & environmental consultants. In April Bankable feasibility started April 2004 commenced with a bankable feasibility study for the pipeline

NuEnergy Gas (NGY) is making rapid strides in its seven-year-old mission to become an Indian Ocean rim unconventional gas company by stepping up operations in Indonesia and by making a new country entry into MozambiqueWithin its Indonesian flagship project it has successfully completed two pilot wells within the 40%-owned Muara Enim PSC where it hopes to establish production next year. As its partner in the joint venture is Indonesia’s national oil and gas corporation Pertamina (60%), which owns major pipelines and gas plants in the region it expects a smooth path to market

On 13 May 2013, Malawi’s Vice President Khumbo Kachali and the Minister for Mining John Bande participated in a ribbon cutting event to mark the commencement of NuEnergy Gas Limited‘s airborne geophysical survey at its Exclusive Prospecting License (EPL 0360/2012) site. This is the first unconventional gas exploration license to be awarded in Malawi. The Indonesian and African focused energy company has a license that covers shale gas and Coal Bed Methane (CBM) exploration in the Mwanza river basin in Chikhwawa District, southern Malawi. The area is 346 square kilometres and the company acquired the licence for USD 100,000. The company has also identified business opportunities in the unmet demand of energy and transportation.Malawi’s fiscal terms for CBM and shale gas provide a development incentive with 5% gross royalty and 25-30% company tax rate, according to the NuEnergy Gas’website. The company intends to undergo extensive geological and geophysical studies within its EPL area in the first half of 2013 to determine sites for drilling in the river basin. Drilling is expected to commence in the second half of 2013.The initial field geological surveys were completed in November 2012 and the follow-up airborne geophysical survey to be conducted by New Resolution Geophysics will take 12 days (6,000, one-kilometre lines spaced 250 metres apart). According to Oil Voice, quality will be controlled through the daily verification of survey data by independent geophysicists from JMJ Petroleum.NuEnergy’s Chairman Mr Graeme Robertson commented at the ribbon cutting ceremony,We are delighted to commence the airborne geophysical survey in Malawi over the potentially significant Karoo shale formation contained within our license area. This program is a significant development for both Malawi and NuEnergy and it has been exciting for us to mark the occasion with a ribbon cutting event, attended by distinguished guests such as the Right Honourable Vice President and the Honourable Minster for Mines. Malawi is an under-explored emerging country rapidly gaining acceptance through its Government reforms and with major World Bank and IMF support. The country possesses significant unsupplied demand from its transport and power sectors and we remain very optimistic about the development potential of EPL 0360/2012.Kachali, who cut the ribbon during the inauguration of the K3 million ZS-RZM helicopter to be used for the survey, claimed that efforts made to reverse the 2012 economic downturn are paying off,The involvement of NuEnergy, Australian companies and local investors in the project signifies that the government plans [Economic Recovery Plan] have started bearing fruits. The product of the exploration shall give opportunities for the development of various industries thereby promoting job creation which shall lead to poverty reduction.

Drilling in Q1 2015
So what is the plan moving forward?Firstly, as the team has conducted seismic studies over the last one year and secured all required approvals, drilling can start almost immediately. The team also has identified a few sweet spots.Kee says the immediate plan will be to drill 3 wells in Muara Enim 2, and 3 wells in Rengat, starting from the first quarter of 2015.“The PSC for Muara Enim is right smack in the middle of Australian based Santos and Darts Corp. Many wells have been drilled in the area for conventional oil, hence there are extensive data available to us. We are in an area where CBM wells have been drilled,” says Kee.He adds that in the past, over 1,500 wells have been drilled in this basin for oil. The oil reservoir is a lot deeper than the targeted coal layers,” says Kee.NGY drilled 3 wells in Muara Enim II previously with encouraging results.“We are very confident to achieve even better success with the combination of our experience in CBM and local knowledge from NGY.“If the wells we drill in the first quarter of 2015 are a success, it can be a pilot program within the next 6 to 12 months,” explains Kee.On another important note, Kee points out that they can sell the gas at the range of US$7.50 to US$10 per mmbtu. In addition, the PSC areas have a well established pipeline infrastructure that connects the fields to Jakarta and Singapore. These pipes have capability of handling 1.2 billion cu ft of gas per day.Meanwhile, the trading volume of Globaltec continued to hog the volume list over the week.On Thursday, Globaltec closed at 10 sen, up 67% from a week ago where it had been hovering at the 6 sen level.Goh is the biggest shareholder of the company with a 19.51% stake, while its deputy chairman Kong Kok Keong has a 13.11% stake.Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera is also a substantial shareholder with a 6.25% stake.Globaltec’s share base is 5.27 billion shares and it has a market capitalisation of RM511.3mil.

NuEnergy, as an existing PSC holder in Indonesia, has pre-emptive rights to develop and commercialise shale gas resources in their existing PSCs. This additional undeveloped resource, will be further evaluated by NuEnergy by joint study groups with the Government of Indonesia and has the potential to add further economic value for the company.NuEnergy has the capability and advantage to commercialise these additional resources considering the strategic location of the PSCs. All of NuEnergy?s Indonesian PSCs are adjacent to major gas pipeline infrastructure connected to the following significant under supplied gas markets:The Singapore gas pipeline which connects NGY PSCs to the +1.1 billion cubic feet (BCF) per day Singapore gas market; The 425 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) Chevron Duri Steam Flood project located in Sumatra; andThe pipeline to the Jakarta / West Java, which has a capacity of 440 mmscfd. The Singapore and Duri Steam Flood gas markets offer the opportunity of oil equivalent gas prices between 75 and 95% of indexed crude oil prices.LNG World News Staff, October 08, 2012; Image: NuEnergy

Coalbed methane (CBM) is a form of natural gas that occurs in coal beds. During the coalification process, large amounts of gas (mainly methane) are formed biologically in the coal deposits and released during coal extraction. Although CBM production is a complementary aspect of coal mining, it has only started to gain attention in recent years.CBM holds great potential as a global resource because the world contains abundant reserves of this gas and - moreover - it is an environmental friendly fuel. Countries that contain large CBM reserves and are active in its production are Russia, China, Alaska, Australia, Canada and the United States. Most of the world's reserves of CBM, however, remain untapped.Indonesia's CBM reserves are among the largest CBM reserves in the world. Currently, the country's reserves are estimated to be around 453 trillion cubic feet (tcf) which is equivalent to around six percent of total global CBM reserves. This number also implies that Indonesia's CBM reserves are more than double the country'snatural gas reserves
