I started investing in 2014 with RM10,000 in capital and I've grown that to RM 55,000 in 2020. I made many mistakes along the way but I was lucky to have learnt them without repeating much of it.

A close competitor to KLK but both IOI and KLK are still lacking compared to UP.

Hey Multibagger, thanks for pointing it out. Yes, I was aware if I took the latest results, the fair value would be even higher. Just means that the current value is a good discount. Same here thou, I've bought into the company too :)

Just my two-cents on Elsoft, the business is heavily dependent on one customer which is a serious problem but apart from that, the business looks good with a health balance sheet and a strong competitive edge.
Might be worth a second look and weigh in on the risk of single customer concentration.

Hi everyone, its been a while but here's my 2cents on the company. The tobacco black market's uncontrollable growth is not something BAT can handle alone. It requires strong government intervention. We can't hope for the government's support so its definitely a very risky counter to invest on and there are better stocks to invest in other than BAT.
With that said, the current price and expected dividend payments makes BAT quiet attractive. The counter is likely to be undervalued. Its just that the risks are high and the returns will likely be low.

the method works well if you're good at considering possible future scenarios. it's not meant to calculate one value but a range of values. from those scenarios, you determine if th investment is worth the risk. definitely used to cari makan. it's been working well for me so far.

it's not that I'm pessimistic, it's just a very conservative method of valuation. I know that this method would filter out most if not all companies.
I did consider the cash position, which is why when I purchased lii hen, I knew it was a no brainer. the thought process and my evaluation isn't simply factoring in the numbers but a consideration of the worst case scenario and if I could still profit from such a scenario.

Hi Patrick, thanks for pointing that out! I'll include it in the next article.
For this article, I used the discounted cash flow (DCF) method to calculate my fair value.
You'd need to first determine the free cash flow (FCF).
FCF = 5-yr average operating cash flow - capital expenditure - operating expenditure
= RM 74.4 million
For the DCF method, my constrains were two situation:
1% growth rate for 10 years
3% growth rate for 10 years
PE = 12
discount rate = 7%
DCF method (1%) = RM 2.78 per share
DCF method (3%) = RM 3.38 per share
Considering that I could be wrong in my calculations or estimates. I took an approximate 20% margin of safety. Therefore, final fair value was determined to be:
DCF method (1%) = RM 2.78 per share x 80% = RM 2.22 per share
DCF method (3%) = RM 3.38 per share x 80% = RM 2.70 per share
I hope that answered your question.

Apollo remains a wonderful company which generates consistent dividends for its investors. Its lack of growth and innovation is troubling but I believe the company could easily sustain its dividends and cash flows for another 10 years and hopefully more.

Just my thoughts on the industry and the company. It's probably trading at fair value even though the NTA is high. We have to consider the fact that the business does not generate high free cash flow as most of its cash if used up to purchase new equipment and to pay off debts.

That's a good point. The fact that we are number 1 shows that we lack a proper response to this issue. I think the Ministry should step up their game, the constant change in direction and policies show that they don't seem to know what their suppose to do. Maybe the best response (although it might be the least politically correct response) is to reduce excise duty tax to allow BAT to compete on even grounds.

Ajinomoto is a fairly defensive stock with a good dividend rate. The high cash position and solid brands would likely see the company through these tough times. At RM 14.30, the margin of safety is roughly 7% but you can keep it on your watch list to buy when its cheaper.
