KUALA LUMPUR: The government will not be able to do away with the highway toll collection due to the country's current financial position, says Works Minister Baru Bian.
Hence, it is misleading to assume that the new government will do away with toll collection in two to three months, he said on Tuesday.
"We will hold on to the present toll (collection) until the financial situation of this country is healthy. This means we are looking at other alternatives," he said.
He also said his ministry gets between RM600mil and RM800mil of the RM2bil annual budget.
"Every year, we get less than 50% of the RM2bil budget and we have been asked to reduce further. We have a 30% backlog of maintenance to do. If we do not carry out the road maintenance, this backlog will rise to 40%-50%.
"Safety of road users is paramount. So we are going to plead with Finance Ministry to get our allocation. If we do not do maintenance, you will get potholes and other issues," he said.
“So doing away with toll collection will have to wait until the country is in better financial health,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 8): Reach Energy Bhd has drilled its first exploration well on its Emir-Oil asset in the Kariman field, Kazakhstan on Oct 6.
The well is expected to confirm the larger extent of the hydrocarbon resource being exploited in the Kariman structure.
"This exploration well will also augment the geological understanding of the prolific trend and support further exploration efforts," said Reach in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today.
According to Reach, the expected success of this exploration well would increase the group’s 2P (proved and probable) reserves by "a significant amount".
"One specific target is to confirm the maximum depth of the oil accumulation thus reducing uncertainty in resource calculations," it said.
The target total depth of the well is 3,937m. The total drilling duration is expected to be 120 days.
"Our advanced drilling programme will be undertaken by a mix of local and international reputable service providers such as Sinopec, AsiaPetroService, Drill-Lab Kazakhstan and KazPromGeofizika," said Reach.
Reach shares closed five sen or 10.53% lower at 42 sen today, giving it a market capitalisation of RM543.08 million.
