BEIJING (SCMP): A Sichuan hotpot restaurant has been punished by the local government for creating “saliva oil” by recycling the leftover chilli oil soups of diners and mixing the brew with new oil to serve the next customers.

The Nanchong Market Regulation Administration, in southwestern China’s Sichuan province, reported on December 2 that it busted a hotpot restaurant that recycled leftover “old oil” and added it into its hotpot soup base.

The government conducted an investigation on the restaurant after receiving a tip-off from a diner.

They seized 11.54 kilos of recycled beef tallow, a chief ingredient of Sichuan and Chongqing spicy hotpot, in the restaurant’s kitchen.

They also examined four pots of ready-made soups that contained beef tallow that looked different from packaged beef tallow they bought from legitimate companies.

The restaurant’s owner, surnamed Chen, admitted that they had been extracting chilli oil from diners’ leftover soup base since September, and mixing it up with new oil, to “improve the soup’s flavour” and “mend its dismal business”.

The administration confiscated all the recycled oil, and transferred the case to the local police department for further investigation.

According to NK News, the Russian Telegram channel “Romanov Light” reported on Friday that North Korean soldiers launched a powerful assault on Plokhovo village in Kursk, killing more than 300 Ukrainian soldiers and taking control within two hours. The incident reportedly occurred on December 6. The Telegram channel described the attack as merciless, stating that the troops struck with lightning speed.

Tesla aside, Chinese cars are technologically superior because the Chinese government systematically worked for them to be. As an industrial strategy for high-tech manufacturing, Made in China 2025 and the Five-Year Plan for 2021-25 have been highly successful. The Chinese state financially supports not just domestic EV firms but all parts of the supply chain from metal mining and processing to battery production. In comparison, European political efforts were financially paltry and much more fragmented, leaving its manufacturers dependent on Chinese-dominated supply chains. Escaping this dependency is extremely difficult, not least since China’s 2020 Dual Circulation strategy was in part a project to entrench permanently Chinese firms into the high-value parts of supply chains and force foreign reliance on them. These companies also benefit from the Chinese state prioritising energy security and price over any political preference for one energy source over another substitutable for it. With coal still providing around 60% of China’s electricity and constituting more than 50% of the country’s overall energy consumption, China’s industrial energy costs are significantly lower than those in Europe, most of which is much more dependent on natural gas.

More than a coherent economic strategy to advance the existing European car industry, the tariffs on Chinese manufacturers provisionally imposed by the European Commission in July 2024, and made permanent in October, are a desperate political response to the crisis. When, in May 2024, the Biden administration placed 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs entering the American market, Chinese manufacturers had barely any EV market share and no Chinese EV manufacturer has an operational plant for exports in either Mexico or Canada to access the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The EU, by contrast, is already China’s largest export market, while BYD will begin producing EVs in Hungary in the second half of 2025 and Turkey — equivalent to the EU’s Single Market for export purposes via the country’s long-standing customs union with the EU — by the end of 2026.

KOTA BARU, Dec 24 — Police intercepted two cars and found 400,000 white cigarettes worth RM473,000 at Kampung Dalam, Tumpat, on Sunday.

General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure was carried out by a team from Battalion 8 around 1.30 am.

“In the incident, GOF personnel spotted two suspicious vehicles while carrying out their duties under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan.

“One suspect, aged 28, was apprehended while another managed to escape after abandoning the car by the roadside,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Nik Ros Azhan said both men are believed to be couriers tasked with transporting the cigarettes to the local market. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.

In a separate case, Nik Ros Azhan said a team from Battalion 9 thwarted an attempt to smuggle 435 fake branded handbags worth RM435,000 in front of a petrol station in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, last Saturday.

He said the seizure was made at 6.30 pm after the team stopped a lorry driven suspiciously by a male suspect.

“A 34-year-old man was also detained for allegedly transporting the imitation handbags from Thailand to the local market.

“The total estimated value of the seized items is RM435,000 and the case is being investigated under Section 100 of the Trademarks Act 2019,” he said.

The suspect and confiscated goods have been handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living for further action, he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) is challenging Malaysia's household classification, arguing that only the top 30 per cent of households are truly middle-income or aspirational.

KRI's findings contrast with the government's view that the top 60 per cent, made up of Middle 40 (M40) and Top 20 (T20) groups, are middle class.

Malaysia has consistently followed the World Bank's demarcation of Bottom 40 (B40)/M40/T20 from the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) to the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (11MP) for almost 15 years from 2006-2020.

"Our findings challenge the existing B40, M40 and T20 classification that reveals discrepancies between income demarcations and actual expenditure patterns," it said in a report entitled "Searching for the 'Poor' and the 'Middle-Class' in Malaysia" released today.

Distinct from The Alliance, the new arrangement will see Nissan and Honda merge under a new, as-yet unnamed holding group. The deal is tipped to be finalised by August 2026 and the new company will be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE).
Mitsubishi’s involvement in the new company will be decided by January 2025.
This is a response to Nissan’s current position, with the company battling sales declines, shrinking profits and huge debts. Specifically, China is the main target, with Nissan’s sales in the country down 50 per cent last fiscal year. New, electrified and ‘software-defined’ products are desperately needed.
Banding together won’t see Nissan and Honda outsell Toyota, which delivered over 11 million vehicles last year. Still, with Honda’s 3.8 million unit and Nissan’s 3.4 million unit projections, the pair will be close. Add Mitsubishi’s circa-900,000 sales and that’s over 8.0 million.

In total, the United States has incurred losses of US$390 million (RM1.74 billion) following the destruction of 13 high-powered MQ-9 Reaper drones, developed by General Atomics, at the hands of Houthi forces.

Beijing is taking steps to address the increasing detentions of business executives by local authorities, which have raised concerns among companies and investors. In 2024, over 80 executives from listed firms were detained, prompting the central government to implement measures aimed at curbing these "shakedown" practices. The China Securities Regulatory Commission now requires companies to disclose any detentions of key executives, reflecting a push for greater transparency and protection for business leaders。

Electric vehicles are expected to outsell cars with internal combustion engines in China for the first time next year, in a historic inflection point that puts the world’s biggest car market years ahead of western rivals.

China is set to smash international forecasts and Beijing’s official targets with domestic EV sales — including pure battery and plug-in hybrids — growing about 20 per cent year on year to more than 12mn cars in 2025, according to the latest estimates supplied to the Financial Times by four investment banks and research groups. The figure would be more than double the 5.9mn sold in 2022.

Attracting global talent to China
Peter Sarnak noted that China is becoming highly competitive and boasts “tremendous talent.” Before recruiting Sun Song this year, Zhejiang University had attracted former University of Michigan geometer Ruan Yongbin in 2021 and Harvard University number theorist Liu Yifei in 2022.
