KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of Hibiscus Petroleum continued to lose ground at midday on Wednesday, made worse by news that a shareholder saw 66.97 million of his shares disposed of.

A filing with Bursa Malaysia showed Datuk Seri Muhammad Syafiq Baljit Abdullah had the shares – comprising of a 6.82% stake -- disposed of in the open market due to “margin call forced selling” on Tuesday.

He ceased to be a substantial shareholder of the oil and gas special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) after the disposal of the shares,

At midday, its shares were down 1.5 sen to 23 sen. Turnover was 40.94 million shares done at prices ranging from 22 sen to 25 sen.

Its market capitalisation was RM980.806mil.

Hibiscus’s shares had been hammered following concerns over its proposed acquisition of Hydra Energy Holdings Pte Ltd (HEH).

To date, Hibiscus shares have declined by more than 70%.

The decline in the stock price could impede the company’s ability to raise funds as well as to finance its latest acquisition.

Hibiscus has committed to acquire HEH primarily via the issuance of shares, according to its disclosure to the stock exchange on Nov 9.

However, it is also not ruling out other form of financing which would be mutually agreed to by the parties.

As part of the deal, Hibiscus also entered a commitment to pay Hydra a “break fee” of US$3.5mil if the sale and purchase agreement is not executed by April 30 next year or if the company fails to obtain shareholders’ approval for the deal.

The deal will most likely require an additional round of fund raising for Hibiscus. This is because its cash and bank balance as at June 30 stands at RM5.93mil.

In its disclosure to Bursa Malaysia on Nov 13, Hibiscus clarified that he acquisition of HEH is set to boost its total estimated reserves to between 23-25 mil barrels of oil, tripling the company’s current Australian assets.

HEH is principally involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas.

The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources has reported that the state’s oil production dropped by about 25,000 barrels a day in September. As the chart below via @javierblas2 illustrates, North Dakota oil production has dropped on a year-over-year basis for the first time in over a decade.

The September data also illustrate that the number of wells that are drilled but uncompleted (DUCs) have risen above 1,000 for the first time ever, as oil producers defer pulling oil out of the ground at current prices, hoping instead for better times ahead.

Consequences of lower oil prices are now really having effect in North Dakota. Never before, since the shale oil boom started (2007), August production numbers were lower than July production numbers. September production numbers, are now lower too.

Unless the fact that these production numbers almost equal the production predicted by the Season Effect Model, the way it got there is a sign of dramatically changing dynamics. In the graph you can see the pale blue line always following the purple yoyo movement. This is the 5 month moving average in the change of daily oil production following the first derivative of the model. For the first time now this trend is broken severely. The pale blue line goes down significantly, while it should have gone up fiercely. This new reality must be combined with the upcoming winter conditions in North Dakota. Be prepared to see a loss of production of 100,000 barrels per day over the course of the next 6 months!

The good news is: there is now upward potential for oil production in the future. At higher prices.

The bad news is: North Dakota is losing oil production at a rate of 2.5% per month. And this, despite 40 new wells being added.
