Financial commentators have attributed Tesco’s £6.4 bil FY14 pre-tax loss to a kitchen-sinking exercise by chief executive Dave Lewis

Kitchen-sinking – an accounting strategy to lump all bad news/losses at one-go so a company can start with a clean slate – has not gone unnoticed by smarten-up investors and analysts.

Although such exercise is not deemed unscrupulous because listed companies have to abide by stringent accounting standards or code of conduct, the tendency of kitchen-sinking being carried out on the final financial quarter – as opposed to being spread out throughout the whole financial year – has raised eyebrows.

Some market observers are concerned that “big-scale kitchen-sinking” could hurt market sentiment of the affected counter and if left unchecked could pave the way for unscrupulous parties to manipulate stock prices. For example, investors – reeling from shock that their stock has incurred massive losses – may react by disposing their entire stockholding at any cost.

This would enable syndicates to mop up their shareholding and walk away with handsome gains when the share price recovers.
