I think you got mixed up with Gamuda. They are the tunnelling giant in Malaysia through MMC-Gamuda. However, you are right about IJM being major shareholder of Scomi. It's been a long wait for them to see their investment bear fruit. So, #IniKaliLah!
As for your question on which to buy (Scomi vs KNM vs Scomies vs Sapura), I don't know much about KNM. But with regards to SAPNRG, they are Petronas' biggest vendor, & with crude oil reaching higher levels, expect more investment from Petronas & involvement from SAPNRG. However, with their debt, don't expect to reap immediate profits. Comparing SCOMI & SCOMIES is easier, IMHO. SCOMIES is less debt laden, & it is is the O&G industry which is on the rise.They are in a niche business which is highly required by the drilling companies, not competing with the likes of SAPNRG, KNM, VELESTO, HIBISCS, etc.So relatively, SCOMIES is a safe bet. But the profit margins of their business is not as big as the O&G construction contractors like SAPNRG,VELESTO, KNM, etc.
SCOMI, however, is an entirely different ball game. They are in the rail industry, one of only 3 proprietary monorail manufacturers in the world (IP belongs to SCOMI)& 100% Malaysian company. While after a lull, the rail industry in Malaysia looks like it is about to pick up, Monorail is not really a popular mode of travel overseas. While it has its advantages, SCOMI's lack of high marketing budget means that there is little publicity on monorails, especially in India. After the recent contracts with Prasarana, there is hope yet. After KL, SCOMI ca start renegotiating in Mumbai & Sao Paulo. Also remember that in the Penang Transport Master Plan, there are two monorail lines, and with SCOMI being a local company, they stand a good chance of clinching the deal. So there is huge potential in SCOMI, but the risk is that previously also, SCOMI had almost RM5 billion worth of potential projects but nothing turned up. Can SCOMI do a better job now under new management? Only time will tell... At this point, I can only recommend to watch closely.For those who are willing to play the long game, go ahead & buy now. It will become more expensive later as bid successes are announced.
