Do you know that the 'tuan melayu' was totally Mahathir master piece! Back in 1911, the malay population was only 1 million! And local chinese population too was 1 million!
Before one thinks that British was a colonizer, it was actually much more complex! The Dutch was colonizer! But the British came and negotiated with the malay royals!
The royals in exchange for British exploitation of resources, pay the royals a handsome commission! So the malay royals were actually very wealthy under British! They were happy! And so are the malays! I guess the easy going live under British made malays docile at best!
But Mahathir was not happy! By the way, Mahathir is not a malay! He is more indian than malay!
But Mahathir saw the opportunity to make himself champion of the malay race! Hence, he manipulated history to suit his agenda! He constantly tell us that malays are lazy, untrustworthy and always take easy way out!
During his 22 years, he made migrants from Indonesia into new malays! The transition was unnoticeable as malays and indons share very similar background! In fact even after Mahathir, the rest of Umno presidents continue to legalize muslims from other countries and turn them into new malays!
Hence today, we see significant portion of malays are not genuine malays! Take Zahid Hamidi for example, he is indon as both his parents came from Indonesia! Even some royals originated from Indonesia too! Due to mix marriage and so forth!
The genuine malays can still be found in Kelantan, Pahang and Terrenganu! The rest of east coast peninsula, most of them are not genuine malays!
It is what it is!
The thing is, the 'tuan melayu' invented by Mahathir finally exploded as Umno no longer as strong as it used to!
