GEORGE TOWN: In a bid to enhance the quality of universities, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the importance of granting university students a voice for their opinions and constructive criticisms.

Anwar revealed that he has already engaged in discussions regarding this matter with the Higher Education Minister, with the next step involving convening a meeting with the vice-chancellors of all universities.

"Only by allowing students to share their views and criticisms, can we uplift the standards of universities," he said during the 'Temu Anwar Pulau Pinang' programme here today.

More than 5,000 students of various institutions of higher learning attended the programme.

Anwar stressed the significance of continuous education for university students, enabling them to make informed judgments and cultivate critical thinking skills.

He also reminded students not to abandon the practice of reading, adding that the culture, if abandoned, would not allow them to become a knowledgeable generation.

Anwar cited the ongoing controversy surrounding Kedah's claim on Penang, emphasizing that a comprehensive understanding of history was readily accessible through reading.

"If we want to be leaders, more so in this challenging world, don't play politics (jangan main suara picisan). Instead use knowledge to save the people," he added.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the country hoped for a young generation, especially among students, who have charisma, confidence, courage, clear goals and purpose in life.

Furthermore, Anwar expressed his hopes for the younger generation, particularly students, to possess qualities such as charisma, confidence, courage, and a clear sense of purpose in life.

He emphasized the importance of avoiding narrow racial perspectives, religious extremism, and the propagation of hatred within communities.

"We accept the statements and principles enshrined in the Constitution about the position of Islam and the special rights of Malays and Malay Kings.

"But this is not a reason for us to plant seeds of hatred because everyone, irregardless of skin colour, have rights.

"So, this is the moment where young people stand up to defend the national values ​​that we have held all this time," he said.
