PUTRAJAYA: The Transport Ministry is continually improving to enhance the efficiency of rail services, including Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT).

Its minister Anthony Loke said his ministry had set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Prasarana Malaysia Bhdd (Prasarana) regarding Mean Kilometres Between Failures (MKBF) to enhance the reliability of MRT and LRT services.

"Those are the weaknesses that we are rectifying in terms of ridership and frequencies, all of these issues have been addressed fron time to time, not solely because of the AG's Report.

"We have established KPI systems for Prasarana regarding Minimum Kilometers Between Failures (MKBF) to track the number of failures to ensure that MRT and LRT services are more reliable.

"If our services are more reliable, eventually the ridership will increase. The ridership has in fact increased this year," he said in a press conference after chairing the National Shipping Port Council (NSPC) meeting here today.

He said Prasarana is now servicing almost one million passengers daily and 800,000 of them take the MRT and LRT, while 200,000 are bus passengers.

Loke was responding to criticisms raised in the Auditor General's Report 2/2024, published earlier today, which highlighted challenges faced by MRT1 and MRT2 in meeting ridership targets, train operations and peak hour frequencies.

According to the report, MRT1's daily ridership has fluctuated between 10.8 per cent and 37.4 per cent against projected targets from 2017, when it fully commenced operations, through 2023.
