BEIJING: Malaysia and China have maintained a "cordial, close, and mature" relationship for over five decades, said Malaysian Ambassador to China Datuk Norman Muhamad.
Norman said Malaysia's deepening ties with China are rooted in mutual trust and understanding, which have allowed the relationship to thrive over the years.
"Our relationship is not just cordial but is built on a strong foundation of trust," he said.
"It is a relationship that continues to grow stronger. Our leaders have developed a deep mutual understanding, which has facilitated continued cooperation despite challenges."
He made these remarks in response to media questions regarding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent visit to China amid some calls for Malaysia to reconsider its closeness with Beijing.
Norman also said China has been Malaysia's largest trading partner for the past 15 years, a trend projected to extend into 2025.
"Our trade relations with China are vital for Malaysia's economic growth, and we expect this trend to continue," he said.
Dismissing concerns that Malaysia's relationship with China could be detrimental, the ambassador called such worries "a matter of perspective," stressing that the country's foreign policy is centred on what benefits Malaysians.
"There is no such thing as being 'too close.' Our diplomatic relations are mutually beneficial, and both countries continue to prosper from them," Norman added.
Under Norman's leadership, the Malaysian embassy in China has also organised numerous events to foster deeper cultural and diplomatic exchanges, further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
