SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government plans to roll out a ban on the use of plastic bags from Friday to Sunday at any business premises in the state next year, says an executive councillor.

Public health and environment executive council member Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the state government is examining the proper regulations to enforce the initiative to reduce the use of plastic bags.

“We have held a workshop to discuss strengthening the relevant laws and enforcement action.

“At this time, it is important for us to know what form of authority can be used under the state government’s jurisdiction when this initiative is announced.

“It can be implemented in line with enforcement actions,” she told the state assembly here yesterday, reported Bernama.

She was responding to a supplementary question from Mariam Abdul Rashid (PH-Meru) who wanted to know the state government’s plans for developing a zero plastic and polystyrene campaign in Selangor.

Selangor began implementing the “No Plastic Bag Day” campaign in 2010, covering Saturdays, with the support of most supermarkets, mini markets, and businesses.

Consumers are charged 20sen for each plastic bag and the money is channelled to charities or consumerism and environmental conservation programmes.
