Environmental impact from RE

RENEWABLE energy (RE) is important for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but the infrastructure built to generate the RE used to power the electricity grid may have an impact on the environment.

Other concerns include the lifecycle of the parts as well as how these are disposed of, and in Malaysia’s case, this would be solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.

There is also the impact to human and wildlife habitat from hydropower plants and the need to balance land use against the relentless demand for electricity as the pace of urbanisation and industrialisation picks up in Malaysia and across South-East Asia.

The extraction of rare earths for use in RE infrastructure parts should also be considered a risk.

While the government conducts its policy review for the energy industry, there must also be safeguards in place to guide, monitor and regulate the building of more RE infrastructure, the disposal of parts such as solar PV panels at the end of its lifecycle and impact of hydropower plants to river systems and fisheries.

A key initiative by the government that will help mitigate the impact of infrastructure such as solar power plants is the self-contained systems encouraging the setting up of solar power facilities on rooftops and floating solar facilities in bodies of water deemed unsafe for human consumption.

This will help optimise land use for other purposes.

There is indeed urgent need to decarbonise and emit less GHG from human activities, and there is surely lots of opportunities at hand with the lifting of the RE export ban in place since October 2021 and the raising of the RE generation capacity target to 70% of the total generated capacity by 2050 from the current 40%.

The potential is in jobs adapted to the unfolding climate change crisis, investments for the infrastructure as well as the nurturing of research and development of RE solutions.

Everything is working fine as it is.
