BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary’s government said on Thursday it has reached a deal with China’s Sinopharm to buy its coronavirus vaccine, the country’s latest move to break away from Brussels as it tries to speed up inoculations to lift curbs on the economy.
Hungary would be the first EU country to accept a Chinese vaccine if approved by Hungarian authorities. Under European Union rules it would have to give an ultra-fast emergency use approval, rather than waiting for the European drug regulator EMA to give the go-ahead for the Chinese vaccine.

In past cases of pythons killing humans, are the victims usually children? Or have adults been killed, too?
There's been some recorded killings of full-grown adults, but it's exceedingly rare. Usually it's kids.
What does the constricting motion of a python feel like?
A snake is made up primarily of bone and muscles ... that are extraordinarily strong. It can be startling just holding a small or medium-sized constrictor and having it just hold onto your arm to keep itself balanced.
A lot of people who hold constrictors think [the snakes] are trying to squeeze them and hurt them, but really they're just trying to hold on.
Is strangulation by a python a quick death?
It doesn't take long. Some people have had pet pythons that wrapped around their necks and cut off circulation, and they pass out and subsequently died from suffocation.
In addition to strangling their prey, do constrictors also bite?
When pythons and boas are killing prey, they use a kind of ambush technique in which they'll jump out at you and strike at you and grab you with their teeth. They'll seize the prey item with their teeth and simultaneously wrap their coil around it and squeeze. And when the victim exhales, that's the time they squeeze a little bit harder to the point where you can't really get a breath anymore.
Do pythons only strangle prey when they're hungry? Or will they do it to defend themselves as well?
When they're defending themselves, they'll either try to bite and crawl away or crawl away first. When they go through all the trouble and exert all the energy to bite something and constrict it, it's because they're hungry generally.
Do pythons typically go after prey that are of a similar size to themselves?
Snakes are opportunists. If they're hungry enough, they may go after prey that's literally too large to swallow in some cases. Snakes have been known to swallow adult male antelope with horns and all and die in the process [see video]. So they'll take whatever they can get if they're desperately hungry.
Is there anything that a person who finds themselves being constricted by a python can do to escape?
This is a horrible tragedy. I think it's a bad idea to keep large constrictors unless it's in a professional setting and you have experience with the species. It's a big responsibility, and this is the type of thing that can happen when you keep exotic animals and they're not secured.

Pekerja E-Idaman cawangan Baling, Mohd. Sayuti Mohd.
-UTUSAN ONLINE

COVID-19 | Kanger International Berhad announced that the National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM) has issued a letter stating it has no objections for the company to communicate with Sinopharm to purchase Covid-19 vaccines for private sector use in Malaysia.
This followed Kanger’s announcement on Sept 29 that the group, which is chaired by former deputy minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed, entered into a three-year collaboration agreement with Sinopharm Group Hunan Changde Medical Co Ltd.
The deal is for the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines and medical equipment in Malaysia developed by China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation (Sinopharm).
"This is a positive step for Kanger in its efforts to commence the distribution of Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccines in Malaysia," Kanger said in a letter to Bursa Malaysia today.
NIBM, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia (Mosti) is the national centre for industry-based research and development in genomics, agriculture and nutraceuticals.
NIBM is effectively a consortium of three national biotechnology institutes – Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals, Agro-Biotechnology Institute Malaysia, and Malaysia Genome Institute.
"The letter from Mosti, via NIBM will strengthen Kanger’s negotiations to purchase Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccines for private sector use," it added.
Sinopharm, a Chinese state-owned enterprise, is the largest and oldest biotech company in China.
"Sinopharm has developed two Covid-19 vaccines which have already entered Phase 3 trials, the final stage before being approved for general use, in more than 10 countries.
"So far, nearly a million people worldwide have received Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use," Kanger said.
The investment holding company added that Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccines can be transported and stored at normal fridge temperatures of 2°C to 8°C.
To facilitate the safe storage, handling and distribution of the vaccines, Kanger aims to work together with Zuellig Pharma Sdn Bhd, the largest vaccine distributor in Malaysia and Asia.
"As one of the licence holders authorised by the government to handle the distribution of vaccines, Zuellig Pharma has extensive capabilities to (store in) warehouse and distribute vaccines in temperature-controlled environments," Kanger said.
The company said that this agreement would not have any effect on the issued and paid-up share capital and the substantial shareholders’ shareholdings of Kanger, as it does not involve any issuance of new shares in Kanger.
"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, any distribution agreements that arise from this venture are expected to contribute positively to the earnings and earning per share of the group in the future."
Kanger also issued a reminder that the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines is subject to and conditional upon approvals from the Health Ministry, National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency and other relevant authorities and/or third parties, if required.
"Kanger does not expect any material risk other than the normal business and industry risks, such as regulatory approvals of local authorities, logistics handling of the vaccines and competitors," it said.
The group added that while it may not have the prior experience to undertake the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, it will hire an experienced team to mitigate any risks that may arise. - Mkini

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 22): Kanger International Bhd has entered into a deal to clinch the rights to distribute a China-developed COVID-19 vaccine in Southeast Asia.
In a bourse filing, the group said that it had entered into a proxy agreement with Shenzhen Public Health Technology Co, Ltd (SZPHT). The agreement is valid until Oct 8.
Under the deal, Kanger has appointed SZPHT to procure dealership status from China National Biotec Group Company Ltd (CNBG), which is a subsidiary of China National Pharmaceutical Group Corp (Sinopharm).
“The intended dealership/distributorship is in respect of the potential COVID-19 vaccines to be produced and/or manufactured by Sinopharm and CNBG, for Kanger’s distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine (Vero Cell) in Southeast Asia,” said Kanger.
The group said SZPHT will be authorised to enter into a distribution agreement and consequently grant Kanger the right to distribute the vaccine procured from Sinopharm or CNBG.
A service fee will be negotiated between Kanger and SZPHT once the latter has successfully secured and assisted Kanger in entering into a distribution agreement with Sinopharm or CNBG.
The latest move by Kanger follows its earlier announcement that it is venturing into the rubber glove industry.
On Aug 11, the group said it was approached by Dubai-based Constellation Holdings Ltd to set up a medical examination gloves operation in Malaysia.
Constellation is the procurement agent for personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical equipment for the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Ministry of Health & Prevention.
Kanger had said that Constellation would acquire 49% of Kanger Glove Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (incorporated on Aug 13) for RM49,000.
The group also announced that it was acquiring some 2.24 ha of land in Kuala Selangor for RM6.8 million for a new rubber glove manufacturing plant for Kanger Glove.
Shares in Kanger finished 8.77% or 2.5 sen higher at 31 sen, valuing the group at RM568 million. The counter saw 223.8 million shares traded.
