The business of covid vaccines
IT was a watershed moment when an elderly 91-year-old woman from the UK received the first Covid-19 vaccine injection.
Her inoculation symbolises the need to protect the vulnerable given the susceptibility of the elderly to the disease. It also shows the willingness to receive the jab that will allow everyone to get on with their lives in resuming the old normal in an increasingly new normal world.
Margaret Keenan’s vaccination was made possible after the UK government approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that broke all records in terms of approvals from the health authorities.
The race to finding a vaccine was top priority for the world given the vast damage the coronavirus has caused to lives and livelihoods, as seen from the wreckage it has caused to the global economy.
The vaccine was the first of many that are in the pipeline and scheduled for public dispensation in the weeks and months ahead.
Scientists, with the benefit of unprecedented funding, have raced the rollout of a vaccine that has delivered in terms of efficacy and safety.
Malaysian companies too have entered the game seeing the amount of money that is to be made from delivering a vaccine to combat the virus.
The vaccine conundrum
The pandemic has been horrendous in terms of human lives lost and the economic cost. Close to 1.6 million people around the world have lost their lives and around 70 million people have been infected by the highly-contagious disease.
Global GDP is expected to contract by 4.4% this year, according to the International Monetary Fund, which was an upgrade of 0.8% from earlier projections given the better-than-expected performance by countries in fighting the pandemic.
The damage seen in the second quarter was the immediate aftermath to the pandemic, and the subsequent rebound in the third quarter was also mirrored by the performance of the Malaysian economy.
After plunging by 17.1% in the second quarter, the country saw a smaller contraction of 2.7% in the third quarter. It took a mammoth injection of liquidity and welfare funds to keep the economy from sinking and people employed. Money was needed to stabilise the economic shock as shown by the size and spending programmes of Budget 2021: the largest spending package by the country.
With the country losing RM300mil a day from implementing the conditional movement control order (CMCO), especially in the economically important areas of the Klang Valley and Selangor, the overall cost of the pandemic would have a telling impact if nothing is done to address the rate of infection. The country was losing around RM2bil a day when the more stringent MCO was in place to combat against the onset of the virus in March.
“The pace and strength of economic recovery is critically dependent on the development of the virus and the availability of vaccines. As the pandemic continues to climb daily, there is tremendous pressure to roll out a vaccine quickly to contain the spread, ” says Socio-Economic Research Centre executive director Lee Heng Guie.
“While a successful vaccine could indeed give a boost to sentiment and the economy in 2021, it will take some time to heal from a historic blow to employment, investment and businesses. Furthermore, it could be many months before any vaccine is administered to enough people. Hence, Malaysians must still follow strict standard operating procedures to protect against the virus.”
While the government had doled out multi-billion ringgit economic recovery packages to starve off a deep recession, Lee says the money allocated to purchase and deliver vaccines, treatments and testing may be huge, it will seem like a small price to pay to restore the economy.
As the world moves towards the recovery phase, Malaysia has stepped forward with its own programme to get 70% of the population inoculated at a cost of RM3bil.
The money that is being ploughed into a nationwide vaccine programme is not small but it is a fraction of the cost that the country had to endure during the MCO and CMCO.There has been much debate over the rollout, given the novel nature of the vaccine and the secret negotiations that were conducted to secure delivery of sufficient doses.
Malaysia has committed to the Covax plan and is reported to pay RM600mil to secure three million doses. That will be enough for 10% of the population.
That number of doses would not be sufficient to cover the 70% population target coverage and separately, the government has inked a deal with Pfizer to cover the inoculation of 20% more of the population, leaving more room for procurement from other sources.

This is the problem when people ignore the URGENCY
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 — Selangor’s spike in new Covid-19 cases indicated that the aggressive and proactive testing in the state was working, former health minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad said today.
He also cautioned against using new daily cases as an effective benchmark for how Malaysia and the state were faring in the fight against Covid-19, saying this was counterproductive to active case detection.
Cases have been yo-yoing in Selangor, going from 277 on Wednesday to 845 the next day and 829 yesterday, which represented nearly half of Malaysia’s new infections reported.
Dzulkelfly acknowledged that the figures were disheartening but said it was not reason to surrender to the pandemic.
“Beware! Numbers may rise further. Why? Because now we are doing more testing, especially mandatory (tests) on foreign workers.
“But don’t despair!” he said on Twitter.
The former minister said the high numbers should instead be viewed as the efficacy of the additional testing in weeding out Covid-19 cases that would otherwise not have been detected.
Discovering and isolating such cases was crucial in order to contain the pandemic, he added.
Rather than stopping at mandatory testing for migrant workers, he said the Selangor Covid-19 Task Force was instead pushing for more detection measures such as testing at-risk communities and thoroughly investigating sporadic infections.
While policies resulting in high numbers would be unpopular as they suggested shortcomings in the state and country’s efforts to contain Covid-19, Dzulfefly said it was far more dangerous and deadly to pursue measures that mask the severity of the disease.
Malaysia was still performing far better in limiting the number of deaths due to Covid-19, he said.
Since the Sabah state election in September, Malaysia has been assailed by a third wave of Covid-19 infections that far eclipsed all cases accumulated up to then.
While it took seven months until September for Malaysia to record its first 10,000 cases, the next 10,000 came in October itself.
From end-October to yesterday, Malaysia added over 60,000 cases for a current total of 80,309
However, the country has also introduced more aggressive testing measures specifically targeting foreign worker populations after it was concluded that workplace clusters were the main source of new Covid-19 infections at the moment.

@chua..as i see it
Like I said before, bamboo is cash cow, vaccine is shining star. Cash cows provide daily operating income, high volume, steady income on a long term basis. Bamboo is the bread butter cash cow business. Rental income from hotel and autocity is also cash cow.
Shining stars are high margin opportunistic products. Vaccine is the shining star. It would start at 3rd mth lasting into 6 to 12 months before vaccine run is over. Of course if it is approved.
Is Sinopharm true or not? I cannot tell you 100%, but from desk research, it is the best info we have to say it is true. I do not base what rumors or allegations without basis in my analysis.
What if all these fell through? Well..all is not lost as we still have the cash cow businesses and Kanger assets are all there eg hotel and autocity both land and building, new R&D center, 2 new factories, land in Malaysia and not forgetting its patented bamboo products and marketing network.
0.17 will not turn into zero value. Neither this company would turn into a PN17.
So why would we talk about vaccine and not bamboo now? Simply vaccine is the low hanging fruits with high potential in the immediate future. Bamboo production results come out only in 1Q 2021. What's there to talk? But feel free to contribute whatever is beneficial bamboo or vaccine.
I am here on long term, I put my money where my thoughts is. So I hope my fellow investors here do not try to teach each another how to invest. We are all here for the best returns. We share what we know. Remember a rising tide lift all boats. Happy investing. Good luck to all.

PP is to find investors to raise cash. Companies do PP cos to borrow from banks means you pay interests, also have to sign all kinds of guarantee. But to find people, the PP price must be lower than market price, otherwise who want to buy? Also PP means company can choose their investor usually strategic ones and buyer must see value in the company. If PP quickly sell out, means people interested lor. If I put in money in a company, I must see chances to make more money. If not I put FD la.

Currently, four Covid-19 vaccines from three Chinese firms are at an advanced stage: Sinopharm has two vaccines in development; private US-listed biotech firm Sinovac has developed a shot called CoronaVac; and CanSino Biologics also has a candidate. Unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, China’s candidates don’t require ultra-cold storage, making them especially useful to developing countries.
The Sinopharm vaccines have been tested on 60,000 volunteers across Argentina, Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco, Peru, Russia, Saudia Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as part of Phase 3 trials. CAIRO, EGYPT receives first batch of Sinopharm coronavirus vaccines
CAIRO, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Egypt received its first shipment of vaccines developed by China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) late on Thursday and will get more deliveries soon, health officials said.
The shipment arrived at Cairo airport from the United Arab Emirates, which has been carrying out phase III clinical trials of the vaccine.
The UAE health ministry said this week that the Sinopharm vaccine had 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of the late-stage clinical trials.
The vaccine has already been used on about 1 million people in China in an emergency programme.
In Egypt the vaccine, taken in two doses 21 days apart, will be free of charge and the government will prioritise vaccinating medical staff and people with chronic diseases, health officials said.
It was unclear how many doses of the vaccine Egypt had ordered, but the health minister said there would be more shipments in the days to come.
Egypt, with a population of more than 100 million, is a large market for vaccines. In September, Russia announced a deal to supply Egypt with 25 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine.
Egypt's government has confirmed relatively low numbers of coronavirus infections, partly due to limited public testing, but has been warning of a second wave of the pandemic as daily infections have risen in recent weeks.
