PETALING JAYA: Hartalega Holdings Bhd does not foresee any oversupply scenario of medical gloves in the next three years, despite the development of vaccine to combat Covid-19 pandemic, said its chairman Kuan Kam Hon.
He said the number of people affected by Covid-19 is only three per cent of the world's population, yet, the consumption of medical gloves has been growing tremendously over the past few months since the pandemic outbreak, which the company estimated to be around 130 billion to date.
"The demand will still be there as the standard operating procedures (SOP) in treating patients affected by Covid-19 has changed.
"Even with our target of an eight to 10 per cent production per year to meet organic growth in demand, with the exception of Covid-19, would not be able to meet this in the next three years time.
"If a vaccine is found, it just means that there is going to be a three per cent drop in demand," he told reporters after Hartalega's annual general meeting here today.

NEW DELHI: India's total coronavirus cases passed five million on Wednesday, health ministry data showed, as the pandemic extends its grip on the vast country at an ever-faster rate.
With its latest one million cases recorded in just 11 days, a world record, India now has 5.02 million infections. Only the United States has more, with 6.59 million.
India has for some time been recording the world's biggest daily jumps in cases, and on Wednesday, the rise was just over 90,000 with a record 1,290 deaths.
While India took 167 days to reach one million cases, the next million came in just 21 days, faster than the US and Brazil, according to the Times of India.

Iran recorded 2,705 new cases of the novel coronavirus Tuesday, its biggest one-day spike in more than a month, in a fresh and alarming spike in CODID-19 infections,
The number of infections jumped to 407,353 while fatalities stand at 23,453 with 140 new deaths announced by Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari.
Iran, one of the first countries in the region to report cases of the virus in February, has struggled to contain infections, as numbers continue to ebb and flow.
It has seen two waves of the virus as authorities struggle to enforce strict social distancing measures and other health protocols.
After a significant dip in infections and deaths in late August, the last few weeks have witnessed a sharp surge in cases and fatalities.
Iran reported 156 deaths Monday from the virus, the highest single-day figure since Aug. 18, when 168 deaths were reported.
New cases identified Tuesday were the highest single-day figures registered since Aug. 4, when 2,751 cases were reported.
Iranian Deputy Health Minister Alireza Raeesi, expressing concern about the new wave, said people went on out-station trips in the last few weeks, disregarding the ministry’s instructions.
He said cases have significantly increased in Tehran and major cities in the last two weeks. In Tehran, single-day cases jumped from 900 to 1,800.
Iran held large ceremonies late last month to mark Ashura – the day Moses saved the Israelites by leading them out of Egypt across the Red Sea.

There are eleven districts in India right now which have reported more than 1,000 deaths of people infected with novel coronavirus. Together, they account for more than 42 per cent of all coronavirus-related deaths in the country, which exceeds 80,000 now.
While most of that list of 11 districts comprise of usual suspects like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune, it also includes three relatively smaller urban centres from Maharashtra. Nagpur, Nashik and Jalgaon have all reported more than 1,000 deaths till now. Their presence in the list is not entirely unexpected though. Nashik and Nagpur figure towards the bottom of the top ten list of cities with maximum number of infected people. Jalgaon has much lesser caseload, but that too figures in the top 25 cities.
In fact, there are three more districts from Maharashtra that are now approaching 1,000 coronavirus-related deaths. Solapur, Kolhapur, and Raigad have all reported more than 900 deaths till now.
That’s not surprising considering the fact that Maharashtra accounts for almost 40 per cent of all coronavirus-related deaths in the country. At 2.82 per cent, the state’s case fatality ratio (CFR), which is the percentage of people dying out of all the confirmed cases, is one of the highest in the country. The state also reports the maximum number of deaths in the country every day.
In the last three weeks, from the time India has started reporting more than 70,000 new infections every day, over 20,000 deaths have been added to India’s death count. This is about 1,000 deaths a day. This number is likely to go up in the coming days as people succumbing to the disease now are those who mostly would have been infected two to three weeks earlier.

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina's coronavirus "positive rate," the number of daily infections to the number of tests carried out, has topped 50 per cent, underscoring how much work the South American country has to do to bring the virus under control.
Health ministry data on Monday (Sep 14) showed the country carried out 17,955 tests the day before, when it recorded 9,056 confirmed COVID-19 cases. That indicates a positive rate of 50.4 per cent, one of the highest in the world.
Argentina, which was one of the region's success stories early on with a strict lockdown imposed in March, has seen infections soar in recent months, first gripping the capital Buenos Aires and surrounding areas and now spreading in the provinces.
The country, which has been trying to open its hard-hit economy, has a total of 555,537 confirmed cases, the tenth-highest case load in the world, with 11,412 fatalities.
The proportion of daily infections to tests had been between above 40 per cent since the start of August, but had not quite climbed above half before Sunday. Other countries in the region including Bolivia and Mexico also have sky-high positive rates.
Latin America is the region with the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths globally, which has pummeled the regional economy, pushing millions below the poverty line.

With these new fatalities, the death toll rose to 133,119, while the total number of cases rose to 4,382,263.
The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in the country, has also been the most affected by the virus, with 901,271 cases and 32,963 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 244,418 cases and 17,180 deaths.

Public health agency RIVM said that 1,379 more people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, the highest single-day total since the pandemic began. The three-day average for new Covid-19 hospitalizations also shot up to 16.7, with an average of 4.3 patients moved into intensive care each of the past three days.
It was the fifth straight day the Netherlands added over a thousand new coronavirus infections to its national statistics. The tally was 60 percent higher than the amount reported last Tuesday. Already this week, the RIVM has registered 2,679 new infections, a 52-percent increase over last week. The latest announcement pushed total known Dutch infections since late February to the 86 thousand mark.
“The upward trend continues with more than a thousand new cases per day,” said Aura Timen, who leads the National Center for Infectious Disease Control at the RIVM. “The patterns are similar: many young people become infected, students, people in their twenties: the virus easily spreads with them," she told newspaper AD.
Of over eight thousand coronavirus infections recorded last week, over 1,450 were linked to people in their early twenties, and 950 were tied to people in their late twenties. Another 800 infections were found in people aged 15-19.

There will be an extra 5,000 hospital beds in Wales to cope with any fresh waves of coronavirus, the Welsh government has announced. Welsh health minister Vaughan Gething said:
The position remains precarious. The challenges this winter will be truly extraordinary. We must be prepared for the worst.
The Welsh government’s winter protection plan, published on Tuesday, says 5,000 beds are available to ensure health boards are able to manage future waves of Covid-19 and any potential spike in emergency admissions.
This has been achieved by retaining a range of field hospitals, new hospital facilities and additional bed capacity created in existing hospital sites.
The government wants 75% of people at risk, such as those with clinical conditions, and health and social workers, to receive the flu vaccine. It has 160m PPE items in stock, with orders placed for more than 300 million further items.

UK records 3,105 more coronavirus cases as recent sharp increase maintained.Today’s count is 3,105, up from 2,621 yesterday. Today’s total is lower than was recorded at the end of last week, but it is still only the fourth time the daily total has been above 3,000 since the end of May. The recent trend - a sharp increase - is being maintained.
The UK has recorded 27 more coronavirus deaths. This is the highest daily recorded total for a week. It takes the headline total to 41,664, but this figure only records people who have died within 28 days of a coronavirus test, and so it significantly understates the true number of coronavirus deaths in the UK.
The daily total for Covid patients being admitted to hospital in England has now passed 150. On 13 September, the most recent day for which a figure is available, it was 153. The previous day it was 143. Only a week ago the numbers were in double figures. The total has not been as high as 150 since early July. The total number of coronavirus patients in hospital in England has now reached 866. That is the figure for 15 September, up from 782 the previous day. It has not been as high as this since late July.

Authorities in Bordeaux and Marseille have announced strict new measures to limit public gatherings in an effort to rein in a rapid surge in Covid-19 cases that risks overwhelming the two French cities’ hospitals.
“The virus has accelerated despite the obligation to wear a mask introduced earlier this summer,” Christophe Mirmand, the government’s top official in greater Marseille area, said on Monday. “We need to take action to ensure health services can cope.”
Admissions to the city’s intensive care units were following an “exponential curve” and had doubled in the past week, the head of the city’s hospital service said. Even with extra beds added over the weekend, the system was “close to saturation point”.
The director of Bordeaux’s main hospital said “all the warning signals are flashing red”. His hospital has 77 Covid patients, he said, of whom 24 are in intensive care, “a very rapid increase over the past 10 days”.
Marseille, with 195 cases per 100,00 inhabitants compared with a national average of 70, the capital, Paris, with 154, and the south-western city of Bordeaux, with 143, have emerged as France’s major virus hotspots, heightening fears of a second wave of the virus.

Spain broke two grim milestones on Tuesday, with coronavirus cases surging to beyond 600,000 and related deaths passing the 30,000 mark.
Over the past month, Spain has become the worst-affected European Union country in terms of confirmed cases. France, with the second-highest number of cases, reports around 387,000 infections.
In the last two weeks alone in Spain, health officials have diagnosed nearly 120,000 new infections, while the percentage of all tests coming back positive continues to rise.
The most recent weekly data shows nearly 13% of all tests taken in Spain are coming back positive – suggesting a growing number of cases are going undetected.
New deaths are also accelerating, with the Health Ministry reporting 156 more deaths on Tuesday than on Monday, bringing the confirmed total to 30,004.
Hospitals are also increasingly full, with a second-wave record of 1,229 COVID-19 patients being admitted in the last 24 hours alone.
Hundreds of doctors in the capital Madrid, where 21% of hospital beds now hold those suffering from the infectious disease, stopped work for a few minutes around noon on Tuesday to call for better working conditions and to highlight the “collapse of primary care.”
Meanwhile, around 17,000 educational workers in the Basque Country took part in a general strike that coincided with the first day of high school.
According to the UGT union, 70% of all teachers, janitors, lunchroom staff, and more participated in the call for safer conditions for themselves and the students.
Various unions called the strike to demand smaller class sizes, more staff, protective equipment, and several other measures to help parents and students adapt to the pandemic situation.
The strike was for one day, but the unions say they will continue if their needs are not met.

MANILA: Experts described as dangerous and premature on Monday (Sep 14) the Philippines' decision to cut the social distancing minimum to 30cm on public transport, as the country saw another daily record in newly confirmed COVID-19 deaths.
Reducing gaps between passengers incrementally to a third of the 1 metre minimum could backfire, experts and medical professionals warned, and prolong a first wave of infections that the Philippines has been battling since March.
The new rules took effect on Monday, when the country reported 259 new confirmed deaths, a record for the second time in three days. Total fatalities increased to 4,630, while infections have doubled in the past 35 days to 265,888, Southeast Asia's highest number.

WHO: Oct, Nov to be 'tougher' with more coronavirus deaths
By AFP - September 14, 2020 4:07pm
The World Health Organization expects Europe to see a rise in the daily number of Covid-19 deaths in October and November, the head of the body's European branch told AFP on Monday.
"It's going to get tougher. In October, November, we are going to see more mortality," WHO Europe director Hans Kluge said, as the continent currently experiences a surge of cases though the number of deaths has remained relatively stable.
The resurgence is however expected to lead to an increase in daily deaths, the WHO said.
"It's a moment where countries don't want to hear this bad news, and I understand," Kluge told AFP in an interview, stressing that he wanted to send the "positive message" that the pandemic "is going to finish, at one moment or another."
'No evidence' people with coronavirus are immunised
The WHO Europe's 55 member states are holding an online meeting on Monday and Tuesday to discuss their response to the new coronavirus and agree on their overall five-year strategy.
However Kluge, based in Copenhagen, raised a warning finger to those who believe that the development of a vaccine will bring an end to the pandemic.
"I hear the whole time: 'the vaccine is going to be the end of the pandemic'. Of course not!," the Belgian said.
"We don't even know if the vaccine is going to help all population groups. We are getting some signs now that it will help for one group and not for the other," he said.
"And then if we have to order different vaccines, what a logistical nightmare!"
"The end of the pandemic is the moment that we as a community are going to learn how to live with this pandemic. And it depends on us and that's a very positive message," he said.
The number of cases in Europe has risen sharply in recent weeks, especially in Spain and France. On Friday alone, more than 51,000 new cases were reported in the 55 countries of the WHO Europe, which is more than the highest peak in April, according to the organisation.
Meanwhile, the number of daily deaths has remained at around the same level since early June, with around 400-500 deaths per day linked to Covid-19, WHO data showed.
