Annuar says walking threesome a ‘chance meeting’
FMT Reporters - January 29, 2021 5:15 PM

PETALING JAYA: Annuar Musa, who ran into a controversy when he was photographed walking with two others, is claiming that he had not walked in a group.
Annuar had been chastised by social media users for flouting standard operating procedures by walking in a group of more than two but he said the trio had not walked as a group.
The federal territories minister said that he, former director-general of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Nordin Razak and former Kelantan Football Association treasurer Nik Aminaldin Jaafar were brisk walking separately.
“It was a coincidence that we bumped into each other for a while and then we went our separate ways.

Everything is open, just lift the MCO, says Najib
FMT Reporters - January 29, 2021 5:19 PM

Najib Razak says loosening the restrictions makes it seem like the government wants Covid-19 numbers to stay high and prolonged.
PETALING JAYA: With farmers markets, night markets and factories all open, former prime minister Najib Razak says the movement control order should just be lifted.
“Construction sites are open, furniture stores are open, jewellery shops are open, luxury lingerie and fashion retailers are open (and) shopping malls are open. Until 10pm,” he said in a Facebook post today.
“Why are we really implementing an MCO when Covid-19 cases are rising but restrictions are getting looser. If that is the case, just stop the MCO to be fair to everyone.”
Night markets in Kuala Lumpur appear to have been given the green light to resume operations after federal territories minister Annuar Musa said Kuala Lumpur City Hall has been asked to prepare standard operating procedures for night markets.
Senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob, meanwhile, said yesterday that the National Security Council has agreed to allow all businesses in essential sectors to operate until 10pm from today.
This includes supermarkets, sundry shops, convenience stores, pharmacies, optometrists, laundrettes and pet shops.

Why short squeeze on Top Glove isn’t as easy to achieve as with GameStop
-A+A
KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 30): The glove bears which shorted Top Glove Corp Bhd shares do not seem to have backed off that easily, despite the move initiated by some anonymous investors to get retail investors to buy more Top Glove shares in order to trap the short sellers in short squeeze positions.

Bursa calls for caution over chatroom stock action
Bernama - January 29, 2021 11:30 PM
KUALA LUMPUR: The Securities Commission (SC) and Bursa Malaysia have advised Malaysian investors to be cautious of social media chatrooms that try to influence the buying or selling of certain stocks based on speculation or rumours.
The regulators said they are closely monitoring the local stock market in light of the current price surge of selected stocks in the US markets, fuelled by social media chatroom groups moving against short sellers.
“Investors should also be wary of discussions in these social media chatrooms that may trigger security breaches such as the provision of investment advice or stock recommendations without a licence,” they said in a joint statement today.
Any person found guilty may be liable to a fine not exceeding RM10 million or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years or both.
In the wake of the GameStop phenomenon in the US, Malaysian retail investors have set up a group called BursaBets on social news aggregator site Reddit to discuss joint action to push up stocks of glove makers, whose share prices had dipped in recent months.
The regulators said market dynamics were different between the US and Malaysia.
“In Malaysia, regulated short selling is only applicable to approved securities in the RSS (Regulated Short Selling) list, which currently comprises 218 securities. Limits are also imposed to prevent excessive short-selling activities,” they said.
In addition, RSS trades require investors to either borrow the approved securities to be short-sold or have confirmation of borrowing of the approved securities. RSS must be undertaken in a designated account where sell orders must be placed at the best offer price or higher.
The regulators said they also conducted real-time monitoring of all trading activities to detect, analyse and escalate trading concerns promptly.
“Where warranted, the SC and Bursa Malaysia will take the necessary measures to curb disruptive trading practices and market abuse,” they said.
Earlier today, the Minority Shareholders Watch Group cautioned minority shareholders to exercise diligence and be aware of the risks involved when taking on institutional investors who short certain shares.

PKR Youth hits out at ‘double standards’ over ministers’ work visits
FMT Reporters - January 27, 2021 2:20 PM
PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth has hit out at the government’s enforcement of the movement control order (MCO), saying there are “double standards” as Cabinet ministers are not adhering to the guidelines.
The wing’s chief, Akmal Nasir, said that under the rules, no official or unofficial events, including meetings, exhibitions and other activities, are allowed to be held.
In a statement, he said finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and women, family and community development minister Rina Harun had gone on a work visit to the Bangi Industrial and Rehabilitation Centre on Jan 24.
He raised concerns about Rina’s presence as she had tested positive on Jan 10.
Akmal said senior minister for economy Mohamed Azmin Ali had also breached the rules when he went on an interstate flood relief mission on Jan 17.
Azmin had said the relief mission to Johor was approved by the National Security Council.
“But the situation is different for the public, like what happened in Segamat, Johor, where a woman was fined for not wearing a mask when she got out from her car parked in front of her own cafe, even though CCTV footage shows the area was deserted.”
This, he said, showed bias and double standards where action was taken against ordinary people but not ministers.

Hedge-fund legends lose billions to Reddit traders running amok

January 28, 2021 12:16 pm +08
(Jan 28): For once, Main Street is beating Wall Street.
In a matter of weeks, two hedge-fund legends — Steve Cohen and Dan Sundheim — have suffered bruising losses as amateur traders banded together to take on some of the world’s most sophisticated investors. In Cohen’s case, he and Ken Griffin ended up rushing to the aid of a third, Gabe Plotkin, whose firm was getting beaten down.
Driven by the frenzied trading in GameStop Corp and other stocks that hedge funds have bet against, the losses suffered over the past few days would rank among the worst in some of these money managers’ storied careers. Cohen’s Point72 Asset Management has declined 10% to 15% so far this month, while Sundheim’s D1 Capital Partners, one of last year’s top-performing funds, is down about 20%. Melvin Capital, Plotkin’s firm, had lost 30% through Friday.
It’s a humbling turnaround for the hedge fund titans, who in 2020 staged a comeback by pouncing on the wild markets caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. But that crisis helped push thousands if not millions of retail traders into the US stock market, creating a new force that for now the professionals seem powerless to combat.
Their assailants are a collection of traders using Reddit’s wallstreetbets thread to coordinate their attacks, which seem to be focused on stocks known for being held short by hedge funds. The most prominent is GameStop, the beleaguered brick-and-mortar retailer that’s soared more than 1,700% this month, but other targets include AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.
The pain is likely spreading across the hedge fund industry, with rumours swirling among traders of heavy losses at multiple firms. The Goldman Sachs Hedge Industry VIP ETF, which tracks hedge funds’ most-popular stocks, tumbled 4.3% on Wednesday for its worst day since September.
Fund managers covered their money-losing short sales while trimming bullish bets for a fourth straight session Tuesday. Over that stretch, their total outflows from the market reached the highest level since October 2014, data compiled by Goldman’s prime-brokerage unit show.
