Genting’s Miami waterfront property draws offer topping US$1.23 bil

July 18): Genting Bhd, the Malaysian casino giant, has received four offers for a trophy Miami waterfront property, once envisioned as the site of a multibillion dollar resort, including a bid exceeding US$1.23 billion.

“There’s been no break in the receipt of offers — at and even above the US$1.225 billion price,” Michael Fay, with broker Avison Young, said in an emailed statement.

The 15.5-acre parcel, the site of the old Miami Herald building, is one of the largest undeveloped stretches of the city’s waterfront. Genting, which once wanted to build a casino there, bought it for about US$236 million in 2011.


A previous agreement to sell the property to a local developer fell through in June.

KUALA LUMPUR: With Genting Malaysia Bhd's termination of the exclusive arrangement with Smart Miami City LLC for the latter to purchase the Miami Herald land, the bidding for the property has now been reopened to other parties.

Kenanga Research said that with Smart Miami continuing to show interest in the purchase, Genting Malaysia may be hoping for better prices by reopening the sale bidding.

"It is unclear whether other or better offers have been secured but given the prime location, securing an acceptable price might be the issue rather than lack of buyers," it said in a note.

‘More direct flights to China will help 3.5 million target’

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is hoping to have more direct and chartered flights from China via strategic collaborations with airlines to achieve its target of 3.5 million Chinese tourist arrivals this year, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said as of now, there are 175 weekly flights from China to Malaysia.

He was met by reporters at the launch of Xiamen Airlines’ inaugural flight from Chongqing to Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Tiong said the flight marked an important milestone in boosting tourist traffic between the two destinations.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kenanga Research continued optimism on the future of Genting Bhd backed by the reopening of China's early this year and the opening of international borders.

Genting Singapore Ltd.'s (GenS) first quarter financial year 2023 (Q123) results, according to the research firm, exceeded market expectations, with its core earnings tripling year over year (y-o-y) as tourists flocked back in large numbers.

It said that the core net profit for Q123, which came in at S$131.2 million, was barely 20 per cent of the consensus projection for the entire year.

"However, we consider the results as within market expectation as we expect stronger quarters ahead for GENS as tourist arrivals accelerate," it said.

"We maintain our forecasts, target price of RM5.86, and Outperform call for parent Genting," it added.
