Banking stocks, regarded as a proxy to the economy, have attracted renewed buying on the back of an anticipated economic recovery, after more economic sectors were allowed to operate and the resumption of interstate travel in the country.

“The banks have agreed not to charge compound interest or penalise borrowers in any form. Banks need the accrued interest on accumulated loan balances as they need to pay interest to their depositors, and bear financing costs,” said Yamani.
Yamani added that banks were discussing the request for a three-month interest moratorium extension for B40 borrowers, who were mentioned in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on transformation and political stability signed by the prime minister and Pakatan Harapan leaders.
“This has to be studied as it will affect their financial status as well as their shareholders’ interests. A workable solution will be announced and implemented.”

While there will be no compound interest, the minister said regular interest (or accrued interest) will continue to be considered on the accrued loan balance.
This is because banks must continue to meet their obligations to pay interest to depositors, cover other funding costs, and allow banks to continue to offer credit to stimulate the economy, according to the minister.

"I would also like to clarify that in implementing the current moratorium, all banking institutions have taken various measures that help to further reduce the cost of credit, especially for the most affected borrowers, and go beyond the obligations set out in the original credit agreement," he said.
First, he said, all banks had agreed not to charge compound interest on interest or penalty interest on all product loans during the moratorium. While there will be no compound interest, the minister said regular interest (or accrued interest) will continue to be considered on the accrued loan balance.

"Second, credit card holders can request to convert the balance of their credit card loan to a term loan at lower financing rates.
"Thirdly, borrowers who apply for assistance through AKPK and are among the most affected, such as borrowers who have lost their source of income or households facing the situation of the death of a breadwinner, can receive a reduction in interest costs from banks as one of the loan restructuring assistance packages," Tengku Zafrul added.

Meanwhile, the US Treasury yields have recently continued to rise with 9 members of the FOMC in favour of an earlier rate hike in 2022 in the recent Fed meeting as compared to 7 previously. The pressure for rate hikes is expected to also spill over to the emerging markets including Malaysia. Any increase in interest rates is positive on banks’ interest income and margins.

Retain our OVERWEIGHT stance on the sector with our top BUYs on RHB Bank (fair value RM6.80/share), Maybank (FV RM9.90/share) and CIMB Group (FV RM5.80/share). We favour banks with expected improvement in regional performance from the gradual economic recovery and banks with undemanding valuations.

Comparing MBB vs Tenaga....my personal view is that MBB has got better value :
MBB 6 mths 2021 : EPS 38 sen...Dividend 28 sen...current price 8.05
Tenaga 6 mths 2021 : EPS 31 sen...Dividend 22 sen...current price 9.71
...and from historical records....MBB's dividend payout is more consistent.

@jeffchan1901 : For Tenaga...what I noticed is...while EPF has been buying MBB lately....but they have sold Tenaga quite a lot.
In September, EPF sold a total of 44M shares in Tenaga.
Don't know why, may be they were realigning their portfolio.

@jeffchan1901 : It was just my personal observation, I may and may not be correct.
What I observed....most of the sell Q are in big quantity...and before this Q comes in in the early part of the morning, sell Q were very minimal...and on several occasion, a minutes before mid day break, sellers pulled out the, 3 Q you are able to see, all at the same time....and there were many days during the preclosing 10 minutes...buyer/seller are Q at preclosed price...but not a single trade was done during the 10 minutes.
....sifu tolle should be sharper at monitoring these types of movement...may be he can share with us.

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 8): Banks have come up with a counter proposal to the government's interest waiver plan, and some banking sources say it has been submitted to the authorities.
However, bankers were tight-lipped when asked what the counter proposal entails. Most just referred The Edge to the Association of Banks (ABM) on the matter.
This is an “interesting” development, a banking analyst said on learning about the banks coming up with a counter proposal, adding this shows that banks are looking for middle ground.

My investing style is simple...I am a value investor...I buy good stocks which I consider cheap and keep for some time...low PE...low PB...and high dividend yield.
I don't chase momentum...and I don't buy hot stocks....example...I don't touch gloves when many are buying during the recent run.

Haha...sifu tolle....nothing to should about....just plain lucky...made some money during the AFC and the dot com run....I was the No.30 shareholder in LKT...bought at average about 2....the stock hit a high of 12.50 in early 2000, but i was greedy and don't know how to sell bcos everyday up by a ringgit...only managed to take some profit.
....then made another round during the sub prime in 2007/8 period....sold all my holding in November 2014...when index was at around 1700+ to 1800.....switch all to ASM in 2015...when 1MDB issue surfaced...units were available then....
....then came Covid 19, I switch out from ASM from April last year....initially bought CIMB at around 3.50....then added Mashing ...RHB....and Genting....
....made some money from these purchase....and topped up MBB since March this year...my initially average was 8.33...then dropped to 8.11 after previous DRP...then topped up again recently...my current average is 8.15...but will drop to 8.01 at the end of this month after DRP is in.

@linges....all analyst do not expect impact from moratorium to be higher this year compared to last year.
Last year the dividend was 52 sen, so I am expecting this year to be higher than that, as interim was 28, I guess can expect final to be higher, which is the norm based on historical record, even last year.
Happy weekend and happy buying in 4th Q.

Sifu tolle : noted your opinion. Thanks.
Entry price at around 8 is always attractive...from it's historical chart, it seldom trades below 8, only during crisis and only for short duration, and also at 8, dividend yield will be about 7%.....I am still collecting slowly, am cautious on the volatile market....but end of the year usually are positive for market...especially blue chips due to window dressing.
