i think for most of us the issue is not that he wants to promote any single counter. The issue is that he go on other forums and sh*t on the counters for no reason. Until Uncle OTB go and scold him gau gau in the other forum

Ya Calvin this half past six analysis neglects to mention the vast difference in the PRODUCTIVITY OF SOP AND UTDPLTS ESTATES. SOP yield per hectare was only 16.58 in its FY2020 whereas UTDPlT was a vastly superior 26.65 indicating much better estate management.
This indicator in itself will explain such a huge discount to SOPs price to book value. If a company is not leveraging its assets well, why pay any premium to it?

@sslee bondholders can only sieze assets if the borrowing is secured. otherwise they will have to line up with the other unsecured creditors to claim back their money via liquidation of the company

Funds don't buy 1 to 10 lots la they transact in hundreds of thousands to millions. You can see the number of transactions in any stockbroker app.
It is now 2.49pm - total value transacted = RM62.35mil, total transactions = 5,112. Average value per transaction? About RM12k. What kind of institution buys in that kind of value?
2021-12-01 14:35 | Report Abuse
Rm52mil in half a day is damn small la.... this counter has been averaging RM200-300mil daily value traded. Yesterday hit RM1.0bn because funds were rebalancing their portfolios for the upcoming change in KLCI

you cannot apply this kind of half past six analysis comparing two completely different businesses. JTIASA = pure planter of CPO, IOI is integrated upstream and downstream from planting to oleochemicals and specialty fats.
IOI's plantation results were solid, +50% operating margin. Most of their CPO is sold as feedstock to their downstream segments, which cannot pass on the increased feedstock prices to buyers, hence profitability was dragged by the downstream.
What was JTIASA's operating margin (palm oil only)? Less than 30%. That tells you all you need to know about their ability to manage palm oil estates. I've said it before, they need to sweat their assets more.
JTIASA missed the golden opportunity of once in a lifetime bull CPO market. Every other planter that is semi competent at running their plantations is reporting 2x - 3x profit. This joker can barely sustain y-o-y performance. Thats all.

@moneySIFU it is not fair to blame management for fair value losses on futures contracts.
As planters you do your best to hedge against future movements of CPO - at the time of hedging TSH probably looked at record CPO prices and decided to hedge with a view that it could go down (instead, and unexpectedly we hit a new record high of 5k per MT).
Fair value losses can come about when a planter has hedged at one price but prices move higher than expected, resulting in unrealised (foregone) profits. If this were the inverse, and CPO prices came back down to earth would it be fair to praise their management?
It is simply best practice to lock in prices (and profits) wherever possible to minimize volatility
