IT firm taps kitchen appliance sales for extra revenue

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24:
Adapting to the worldwide shift towards mobile devices, DVM Technology Bhd is diversifying into another industry which will provide another stream of revenue sources – to reduce its dependency on its existing IT business.

In a Bursa filing today, DVM said it is acquiring kitchen appliance distributor GE Green Sdn Bhd for RM7 million cash – with funds to be sourced internally and via bank borrowings.

Explaining the proposed purchase, DVM said IT would remain as its core business “whilst the distribution of kitchen appliances would become another core business”.
“Since its establishment in 1993, GE Green has grown to be a major kitchen appliances distributor in Malaysia,” said DVM.

“GE Green carries its own brand under the name of Pacifica which is a registered trademark in China and Malaysia. GE Green also distributes other international brands including Beko, Baumatic, and Bertazzoni in Malaysia.”

The revenue of GE Green is about RM9.72 million and net profit after tax is about RM0.45 million, the listed IT firm said.

DVM further noted that the home appliance market in Malaysia was worth RM4 billion last year, compared to RM2.5 billion in 2008. “Between 2008 and 2013, the home appliance market registered a strong compound annual growth rate of 9.7%.
“Malaysia’s domestic market for home appliances has been showing a broad upward trend over the past decade in line with improved per capita purchasing power and greater consumer sophistication.”
