KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia looks set to kick off the new year within the current level, with the FBM KLCI fluctuating between the 1,490 and 1,510 range.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng expects global funds will return to the Asia-Pacific in 2023 and expects Malaysia to benefit from the spillover effect.
“As we enter 2023, we are optimistic about the local market and expect participation by local institutions will increase, given the improving local economy and corporate earnings.
“Furthermore, the reopening of China will certainly inject some excitement into the regional economy including Malaysia,’’ he told Bernama.
He said Rakuten Trade is maintaining its 2023 year-end FBM KLCI target at 1,800 despite global equities markets in cautious mode given the heightened market volatility and still unresolved Russia-Ukraine war.
An analyst said the equities markets are set to be greeted by the Chinese purchasing managers’ indexes (PMI), which could affect first-day performance.
He said despite the country being hit hard by the surge of Covid-19 cases, it is gradually moving away from zero-Covid policy and will reopen the borders from Jan 8.
“Equities markets are sensitive to any worrying PMI figures,” the analyst said, adding that the US non-manufacturing PMIs are also due this week.
At home, the first Monetary Policy Committee Meeting will be held on Jan 18-19 when Bank Negara Malaysia will decide on interest rates and provide an up-to-date overview of the economy.

Founder and group managing director Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum said the group will continue to scout for and acquire new land, supported by its confidence in the M-Series of affordable homes and backed by healthy balance sheets.
KUALA LUMPUR: Mah Sing Group Bhd is optimistic about the property sector’s prospects in 2023, as robust demand for its recent launches of the M series properties enabled it to achieve RM1.69bil in sales as of Sept 30, 2022.
The developer is on track to achieve its 2022 sales target of RM2bil and has set its sales target for 2023 at a minimum of RM2.2bil.
Founder and group managing director Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum said the group will continue to scout for and acquire new land, supported by its confidence in the M-Series of affordable homes and backed by healthy balance sheets.
“Beyond 2023, the mid to long-term outlook remains positive, backed by strong fundamental demand for properties due to the young demography.
“Demand for houses from first-time buyers should remain sustainable,” he said in a statement.
Leong said with its strong balance sheet and healthy liquidity, the group is continuously on the lookout for suitable land parcels to further strengthen its M series portfolio of projects that recorded very healthy take-ups.
He said the resilient demand is driven by continuous economic growth and healthy employment conditions,.
He noted that Bank Negara forecast the nation’s gross domestic product to expand between 6.5% and 7% in 2022 and 4% to 5% in 2023.
The reopening of the nation’s borders on April 1, 2022 also helped to boost property buying sentiment, while the employment condition is stable with the unemployment rate at a healthy 3.7% level.
“Although Bank Negara increased the overnight policy rate (OPR) by 100 basis points year-to-date to 2.75%, the current rate is still lower than the pre-pandemic OPR range of 3% to 3.25%.
“Many believe that properties are a good hedge against inflation.
“And with the recent news of expected increases in house prices due to construction costs hike and inflationary effects, many house buyers are choosing to lock in their purchases now,” Leong added. — Bernama

It said that with a diversified revenue stream as well as an improved and more efficient advertising solution for clients, Astro is increasing its competitive advantage
It said that it likes Astro because it foresees further contributions coming from further uptake of its new bundle packages (content and broadband fibre) as it provides more value and cost savings for customers.
In addition, it said that it has a better value proposition of Astro’s content as it aims to become the #1 streaming aggregator in Malaysia with more streaming service partnerships in the pipeline.
HLIB said that further recovery in commercial subscriptions (which provides a better margin) as international travel resumes for Malaysia.

Media - Err on the Side of Caution Date: 2023-01-05 Firm: HLG Stock: ASTRO Price Target: 0.95 Price Call: BUY Last Price: 0.60 Upside/Downside: +0.35 (58.33%) It is no surprise that the relaxation of pandemic restrictions and the resumption of economic activities helped to drive the growth and recovery in adex seen in 10M22 vs 2021. However, as revenge spending by consumers normalizes following the diminishing base effect and weakening consumer sentiment caused by inflationary risks, advertisers could be more cautious on their ad spend. We therefore downgrade our sector rating to NEUTRAL. There are no changes to our calls and TPs for Astro (BUY; TP: RM1.15), Star (HOLD; TP: RM0.31) and Media Prima (BUY; TP: RM0.54). Top pick for the sector is Astro.
Adex improvement. Unsurprisingly, Malaysia’s adex environment saw vast improvement in 2022 compared to 2021 as the country transitioned to endemicity on 1 Apr, allowing the economy to completely reopen. Based on Nielsen’s data (see Figure #1), 10M22 adex grew by 12% with total industry adex reaching RM5.3bn (10M21: RM4.73bn), following the country’s full reopening of economic activities. All segments registered YoY growths except for in-store media (-66.4%). Top 3 biggest improvements were seen in the cinema (+9.2x), digital (+33.6%) and radio (+29.4%) segments. Notably, we are seeing a bigger shift away from newspapers as a major advertising segment into digital as the gap between the two has widened further (newspapers vs digital adex for 10M21: RM722.3m vs RM815.2m; for 10M22: RM863.8m vs RM1.1bn).
Bleak sentiments. MIER’s latest Consumer Sentiment Index (CSI) and Business Conditions Index (BCI) for 3Q22 came in at 98.4 and 99.8 points respectively, which are both still below the 100-point optimism threshold (see Figure #2). While the QoQ improvement is noted, it is still too early to consider that as indicating optimism. With an uncertain economic outlook for 2023, any decline in consumer spending could negatively impact advertiser’s sentiment and thus lower adex spending. Other than that, the RAM-CTOS Business Confidence Index reading for 4Q22 came in at 46.2 (see Figure #3). This has declined for two consecutive quarters, with the latest reading below the 50-point neutral mark (i.e. >50 is positive, <50 is negative). Firms surveyed stated rising costs to be the main challenge faced with the weakening economy coming in second. Should inflation remain elevated, costs could remain higher for longer and hamper any improvement in business sentiment.
Weakening USD against RM. The USD has begun to come off its peak while the RM has regained its strength post GE15. Should the USD continue to weaken relative to the RM in the following months, this will help ease elevated newsprint costs which is a positive for Star Media, as its print segment might see margin improvements, whereas Astro might see lower hedging costs as the group regularly hedges its USD exposure.
2023 Outlook. With the merits of economic reopening mostly reaped in 2022, the base effect would start to diminish this year. A key dampener to consumer sentiment would be the rising cost of living which would lead to consumers cutting back on discretionary spending – this may in turn cause advertisers to be more cautious with their ad spend as well. 4Q22 adex should be stronger as advertisers spend more freely for the Christmas and Chinese New Year periods, as well as coming off the back of the FIFA World Cup. However, looking further ahead, there is a lack of clarity on the trend of adex following the fluidity of global economic events. For these reasons, we downgrade our sector rating to NEUTRAL (from Overweight). Top pick for the sector is Astro (BUY, TP: RM0.95) as we believe that following the recent selloff, most of the negatives facing the group have been priced in. Moreover, the stock has a projected FY23-24f dividend yield of 9.8%.

PROSPECTS FOR THE FINANCIAL YEAR ENDING 31 JANUARY 2023 Through the New Astro Experience, we are committed to realise our vision to be The Entertainment Destination for Malaysians encompassing: delivering the best content experience across all platforms; becoming Malaysia’s No.1 aggregator of the best streaming and lifestyle services; enhancing local content with more premium Astro Originals; seizing opportunities for adjacencies in digital, broadband, advertising and commerce; and leveraging digital, data and technology to reimagine our business models. Going forward we are continuously investing in our transformation for long term and sustainable growth, focusing on content, broadband, streaming, customer experience, data, addressable advertising and technology to better serve customers. Alongside progressive user interface and experience enhancements, we are committed to making kids’ viewing safer. An increasing number of global streaming apps have been integrated onto our flagship Ultra Box and included in our new Astro TV packages, for the best big screen viewing experience. We expect to continue aggregating the best streaming apps and adding on lifestyle apps which are relevant for Malaysians in the near future. Addressable Advertising is gaining traction in the market and is being enhanced with a unified audience measurement on Linear, On Demand and OTT. We expect Addressable Advertising to have increased industry adoption over time and to continue growing into the future. 75% of customers’ viewing is on local content, driven by our strong pipeline of Astro Originals and signatures including One Cent Thief and Gegar Vaganza S9, while blockbuster movies such as Abang Long Fadil 3 and Air Force the Movie: Selagi Bernyawa and Mechamato the Movie are topping local film charts. As Malaysia’s Home of Sports, we are currently bringing Malaysians the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 showcasing all 64 matches live to our customers in 4K UHD with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and HD. Astro Fibre, our own internet service launched in March, has seen encouraging traction especially across broadband-content bundles, and was recently made available to enterprise customers. We expect Astro Fibre to grow for the rest of the year. On 16 November 2022, Astro won a landmark anti-piracy case against a commercial establishment in the Klang Valley area. This is encouraging as it creates awareness and rightful content consumption behaviour. Ongoing efforts with authorities will continue and the Group expects results of these to be accretive. Macroeconomic conditions including uncertain global growth outlook, rising interest rates, inflation, as well as global geopolitical events with ongoing implications to supply chains; are expected to have an ensuing impact on households and businesses. The Group maintains a cautious outlook and will monitor business conditions, whilst prudently managing costs. It expects market volatility to remain in the shorter term, both in terms of foreign currency volatility and interest rates, and will be managing these with hedge instruments over time.
