Sarawak will continue using RM - Abang Johari

KUCHING: Sarawak will not introduce its currency, but will continue using the Ringgit Malaysia (RM), said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the use of own currency in Sarawak was a complicated matter and needed proper research.
"That is just Nanta's personal opinion. We already have the Malaysian currency, so we have to follow (using the Malaysian currency)," he said after officiating the Sarawak 2023 National Anti-Scam Tour at the Borneo Cultural Museum Auditorium here today.
He said this when asked to comment on Nanta's statement which hinted at the possibility of Sarawak introducing its currency following the uncertain economy in Malaysia.
The Kapit Member of Parliament who is also the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary general hinted at this in a podcast titled 'Dari Malaya ke Malaysia: 60 tahun', yesterday.
Citing a report by FMT, Nanta said the introduction of Sarawak's currency could be considered as one of the measures if the country's economic situation, which is not encouraging, continues.
However, Nanta hopes that people will not label him a traitor as he speaks seriously about the matter.
