IPOH: Perak intends to make it compulsory for owners to neuter their pets before issuing them with licences in the future, says Sandrea Ng.

The Perak local government committee chairman said the matter is still being evaluated, drawing upon some learning points from Negri Sembilan.

“Several of our local governments have come up with the proposal to make neutering compulsory as part of licensing.

“Last year, when Negri Sembilan enforced this rule, they found that there were some who do not want to follow the law, which caused an issue where the amount of applicants for licences have lessened,” she said in a press conference when announcing the Perak Pawsitive Initiative here yesterday.

“There is a concern that because (some) pet owners do not want to neuter their pets, they can forgo obtaining a licence, and we are taking this into consideration.

“Some owners may not want to neuter because of the high cost.

“We want to learn from Negri Sembilan to see how we can make things better,” she said, adding that the matter will continue to be studied with relevant stakeholders.

Ng said a total of 2,726 complaints related to stray dogs were received by all local councils in Perak between January and August this year.

“The local councils have conducted a total of 1,190 operations to handle the complaints, with 4,856 dogs caught,” she said.

“In the last few years, the growing number of stray dogs in the state has become an issue.”
