SUCH is the reaction of one Muslim netizen to Pahang PAS’ proposal to shut down gambling premises - including the casino in Genting Highlands - if the Islamist party succeeds in capturing Pahang in the 16th General Election (GE16).

For backgrounder, the state chapter’s deputy commissioner Andansura Rabu who mooted that idea did, however, caveat that this is easier than done given such actions would first need to be reviewed under existing laws and the jurisdiction of the state government.

Moreover, Genting’s gambling jurisdiction could probably fall under purview of  the Federal government.

Andansura, who is also Beserah state assemblyman, was responding to a question about whether Pas plans to follow the steps taken by Pas-led governments in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah in shutting down gambling premises.

“As if nothing better to do. Go and eradicate heresy camps and those associated with them; moreover, there are many other things that need to be thought about and corrected first,’ lambasted the commenter to a Malaysiakini report that Pahang PAS is prepared to shut down the Genting casino if it comes to power in GE16.

“You are more likely to get run by a bus, hit by a train and Mahathir (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad reaching 200 years old before Pahang closes the Genting casino,” teased another commenter.

One commenter drew parallel between Langkawi’s duty-free attraction for alcohol (which thankfully comes under purview of the Federal government) with casino for Pahang’s tourism sector to thrive as the harsh reality is such that “without alcohol drinks, Langkawi is dead piece of sh*t”.

Many commenters hit out at PAS for not pushing through such radical proposal when the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition was in power for 33 months but instead was “busy shutting down the Parliament, mosques and schools” instead.

“In fact, the casino flourished, gambling grew 22 times, the Timah liquor prospered. It has been proven that Islam is threatened under the PN-PAS.”

While one commenter expressed belief that PAS “will change its mind when it really assumes power given the billions of ringgit in kafir (infidel) money to cover its expenses”, another warned that its action would only create an impression of PAS as a “Taliban party”, thus alienating non-Muslims from supporting the Islamist party.

In short, one commenter insinuated that PAS has the very tendency “to preach one thing but does another”. - Sept 16, 2024
