GEORGE TOWN: The high tide and big waves hitting Penang has drawn curious onlookers.

Checks by the New Straits Times at Padang Kota Lama here and Bagan Ajam in Butterworth showed people clicking away on their phone camera although the waves today were not as big as the past two days.

According to Taufik Basrawi, 38, he has never seen such big waves and high tide.

"I am here on holiday from Subang and came to check it out after reading about the phenomenon.

"This is the first time I see such strong waves. My children enjoyed themselves.

"Nevertheless, we still practice extra caution," said the officer at a local institution of higher learning when met at Padang Kota Lama here this afternoon.

Aidil Hakim, 27, said he has seen such phenomenon during this time of the year.

He, however, said it was different this year.

"The tide is higher while the waves are bigger this time around, possibly due to the heavy rain," he added.

Over at Bagan Ajam, people also gathered to check out the high tide and big waves.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had said that the phenomenon of large waves at several locations in Penang and Pulau Pangkor in Perak was unusual.

Penang has been hit by heavy rain, strong winds, high tide and big waves in recent days, creating havoc in various parts of the state.
