BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said today the establishment of the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Brunei (STATOB) shows its commitment to greater cooperation with Brunei in the areas of renewable energy, agriculture, tourism and trade.

He said the Sarawak government is setting the stage for a symbiotic partnership that will resonate with the communities.

"We envision the opening of the trade and tourism office in Brunei as transcending mere economic transactions and tourism statistics," he said at the launch of STATOB here.

It is Sarawak's second trade and tourism office after the first one in Singapore in 2019.

Abang Johari also pledged Sarawak's commitment to support Brunei in achieving a 10 per cent renewable energy generation mix by 2035, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.

He said the Sarawak government also sees tremendous potential in commercial agriculture, including padi cultivation, aquaculture and cattle rearing.

He added that these initiatives not only aim to enhance self-sufficiency but also open new avenues for cooperation between the regions in the global market.

"With the global halal market expanding and the Middle East as a major consumer, we have a great opportunity to position Sarawak and Brunei as joint leaders in this field.

"By working together, we can create a strong brand that resonates with Middle Eastern consumers," Abang Johari said.

He added that tourism is another key area where their partnership can flourish, particularly in promoting events that showcase Sarawak and Brunei's vibrant cultures and natural attractions.

Abang Johari said Sarawak's story is characterised by strategic initiatives aimed at boosting cross-border trade and tourism while fostering regional collaboration.

He said investments in infrastructure have facilitated the movement of goods and tourists.

He said Sarawak's coastal highway connecting Lawas and Limbang through Brunei is targeted for completion by 2030.

"In the energy sector, Sarawak is enhancing power supply by building a 500-megawatt gas turbine power plant in Miri. This plant is scheduled for completion by 2029," he said.

The premier said northern Sarawak also has tremendous agricultural potential that will be developed as part of the food security agenda.

"Ultimately, this endeavour that is centred around STATOB is not just about trade; it is about people," he said.
