KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's top cop has reminded his personnel tasked with escorting VVIPs to not act beyond the law.

"There are no double standards here," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told the New Straits Times.

"If our police personnel break any laws, we will take action immediately," he said, adding that the public can be assured that policemen would not receive preferential treatment.

He said the proof that policemen were not above the law was "there for everyone to see".

"We have made multiple arrests in the past involving our personnel, and hauled them up to face charges."

He cited the indictment of a policeman in Pahang, along with four others yesterday, for assaulting a 44-year-old man in June this year.

The five were accused of intentionally injuring a man on his right thigh with a knife at a stable in Kuantan.

Razarudin also cited the case involving a VVIP's police escort who was fined RM1,000 for hurting a deaf-mute e-hailing driver at a five-star hotel.

He said such actions had tarnished the reputation of the entire police force.

"Our men and women in the force must act responsibly and never abuse the authority that they have been entrusted with.

"I have said this before, and will say it again... the time for warnings has passed.

"If you break the law, you will face the consequences."
