PUTRAJAYA: While benefits and perks for the top officials leading government-linked companies (GLC) and government-linked investment companies (GLIC) are wide-ranging and deemed attractive, the most “rewarding” is said to be when they go on trips.

It is learnt that due to the manner of their travel, the cost, including allowances and claims can reach up to RM1mil per trip.

GLC and GLIC officials apparently get to travel first class with their spouses, whose travel arrangements are also taken care of by these companies.

Sources with knowledge on the running of a GLC said when a top official travels, he will be put up at top-tier or luxury hotels.

They will also get a rather handsome amount as travel allowance, said one source.

“This benefit is, I believe, the most attractive part of their salary package,” the source said.

Explaining on the spouse travelling together with the top official of a GLC or GLIC, the same source said this does not occur for every trip.

“It is not for all trips that they can bring their spouses, but this is one of the fringe benefits enjoyed by top officials,” the source said.

One crucial point that the source pointed out is that salary and remuneration package for top officials are personal to holder and it is private and confidential.

Another source, who had served in a senior management position in a GLC, also concurred about travel benefits for top officials.

“I liken this to a cherry on top of the cake. They usually get a good salary package. But the most attractive is their travel benefits,” the source added.

The same source said a top official would have to seek approval to travel.

“When a top official plans to travel, the person will have to apply. He or she will also have to give an estimated cost for the trip. A higher authority of the GLC will approve or reject it,” the source said.

Other benefits enjoyed by top officials helming GLCs and GLICs include having a driver and health benefits.
