KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is set to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its operations.

Its director-general, Maritime Rear Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, said the agency was exploring the use of modern technologies to strengthen surveillance of the nation's territorial waters.

This, he said, was in line with the directive from Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail urging the departments and agencies to integrate AI into their operational frameworks to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

"The adoption of AI technology reduces reliance on physical patrols and improves operational effectiveness, especially in challenging-to-reach areas."

Rosli said AI-driven tools such as drones and autonomous vessels could significantly enhance maritime patrols.

"These technologies are capable of conducting automated surveillance over wide areas, detecting suspicious activities and analysing real-time data to facilitate swift responses.

"These advancements promise a more effective and efficient maritime enforcement framework, which is crucial for safeguarding our waters," he said in a statement.

Rosli said the MMEA was also planning to procure new radar systems for deployment in strategic locations, including Sarawak waters and the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

"The new radars will integrate with AI technology under the Malaysia Coast Guard Maritime Domain Awareness system, enabling comprehensive and responsive data analysis.

"This integration would bolster security and ensure effective enforcement across Malaysian waters."

Rosli said he was confident that such initiatives would optimise MMEA's human resources and assets, enabling the agency to better address maritime challenges such as smuggling, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes.

"The application of AI technology is not only relevant but also a strategic necessity for overcoming maritime security challenges."
