Sudden surge in interest in Minetech shares

KUALA LUMPUR (June 17): There is a surge in interest in Minetech Resources Bhd ( Financial Dashboard), which is involved in quarry mining, today. Some 56 million shares changed hands so far, making it the third most actively traded counter on Bursa Malaysia after AirAsia Bhd ( Financial Dashboard) and AirAsia X Bhd (Financial Dashboard) in the afternoon trading.

However, its share price was only up one sen, or 13%, to 8.5 sen as at 3.30pm.

A dealer who declined to be named reckoned that the high trading volume could due to Algorithmic trading.

Algorithmic trading is the use of electronic platforms for entering trading orders with an algorithm which executes pre-programmed trading instructions for a variety of variables such as timing, price, and volume.

“Although the value changed in Minetech is not great, but the percentage of changes is high. It could be a plot by certain parties; investors should take precaution,” the dealer added.

When contacted, Minetech executive director Matt Chin Leong Choy said he is not aware of the reason behind the sharp increase in trading volume on the company’s shares.

“There is no major development to the group’s core business lately,” he added, noting that the due diligence on the two property projects is still on-going.

Minetech in November last year signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Perak-based property developer Glamour Heights Sdn Bhd to acquire the latter and two of its existing projects — The Meru Dream Park and a condominium — for RM27.45 million. The purchase consideration would be fully satisfied through issue of new shares at 15 sen per share — which is double the current market price.

The deal has yet to be finalised, but Chin acknowledged that the group intend to close the deal by fourth quarter of 2015.
