I told you so, Najib says on economic impact of Covid-19

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak today hit out at Lim Guan Eng for dismissing a possible economic downturn from the Covid-19 outbreak, days after Putrajaya said it expected the nation’s gross domestic product to drop by between 0.8% and 1.2%.

Lim, the former finance minister, was last month reported to have downplayed an economic downturn sparked by the outbreak, saying the government’s economic stimulus package would help boost economic growth.

He was also reported to have said the nation had faced similar challenges during the SARS outbreak.

Najib said he had slammed Lim’s remarks then, arguing the impact left by Covid-19 was different for that of SARS because of the current global economy.

“I said then that he was underestimating the impact the outbreak had on the economy,” the former prime minister and finance minister said in a Facebook post.

On Friday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the expected drop in GDP of 0.8% to 1.2% for 2020 represented a decline of between RM10.8 billion and RM17.3 billion.

This translates to a GDP growth of 3.6% to 4.0%, instead of the earlier forecast of 4.8%.

Najib went on to say that the price of crude oil had dropped, and palm oil was being sold at RM2,300 a tonne, while international flights to KLIA had declined by 25%.

“So how is it that the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak is not huge and Malaysia is free of any risk of an economic downturn as he (Lim) had guaranteed? The impact is massive.

“It’s only a former finance minister who does not see this,” he said, adding that Lim “doesn’t know anything”.

Video clip of Richard Riot denying that he has joined PKR goes viral

KUCHING: A video clip, featuring Serian MP Richard Riot Jaem, denying that he had left Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) to join PKR has gone viral on social media.

The video clip shows Riot on the phone with an unidentified individual, refuting a claim by PKR strategic communications director Fahmi Fadzil yesterday that he had joined PKR.

He is heard saying in Bahasa Malaysia: “Ini parti Malaya (PKR), mana boleh I join parti Malaya (This is a Malaya (peninsular) party; how can I join a Malaya party?).

“Because we want Sarawak first now. I’m GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak). I’m SUPP,” he is heard saying.

Riot, who is SUPP deputy president, one of GPS’ component parties, admitted that he had received a telephone call from PKR president Anwar Ibrahim seeking his support for him to become the prime minister.

“So when Anwar called me up looking for support, I said ‘yes’ because I thought Anwar was fighting (against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad).

“When I reached Kuala Lumpur, I saw they were supporting Mahathir,” said Riot, adding that he was shocked by the news that he had joined PKR.

In his latest Facebook status, Riot also clarified that he is still a member of SUPP and claims that he had joined PKR were untrue.

Dr Wee: India should reconsider decision on M'sian palm oil imports

PETALING JAYA: India should reconsider its decision to advise its palm oil importers to shun importing Malaysian palm oil as the country's political situation has changed, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

"I would like to take this opportunity to send a message to the Indian government.

"The situation has changed within our country. India should reconsider its decision," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (March 1).

He said free and fair trade should once again prevail for the mutual benefit of both countries.


"If there is any issue or misunderstanding remaining between our countries, let's discuss openly," he added.

It was reported that Indian palm oil importers were privately told by their government to stop buying Malaysian palm oil following a political row between the two countries when then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in December last year, spoke out against India's then recently-approved citizenship legislation, which appeared discriminatory towards Muslims.

India's new citizenship law made it easier for persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to get citizenship - but not if they are Muslims.

Dr Mahahthir had also spoken out against India's actions in the Kashmir region.

On Jan 7, it was reported by Reuters that India informally asked palm oil refiners and traders to avoid buying Malaysian palm oil, according to government and industry sources.

Before the row, India was the largest importer of Malaysian palm oil.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal was huddled in discussions with party leaders following news that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah consented to the appointment of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the eighth Prime Minister.

Party sources said that the Parti Warisan Sabah president discussed developments with senior leaders of his party as well other Cabinet ministers in his state coalition government.

"They were assessing the developments in Putrajaya," the source said.

"We will issue a statement at the appropriate time," an official representative said.

At 9.30pm Saturday (Feb 29), Shafie was back to his official duties, attending the 87th Army Day celebrations at the Likas Sports Complex here.

The event was also attended by Yang DiPertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

Mukhriz, Syed Saddiq to face disciplinary action; Dr M no longer Bersatu chair

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will likely be facing Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) disciplinary committee, says its supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.

Redzuan said the party had its rules and would follow the required processes.

“For Syed Saddiq, it looks like the position will be made vacant.

"For the youth chief’s position, it will be selected through a party election but he (Syed Saddiq) can still act on those duties on the president’s orders.

“Before a party election, all positions will be based on the appointment of the president, ” he said during a press conference outside of party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s house.

Redzuan also said that he would propose Muzzammil Ismail, the party's exco member, to take over as its youth chief as he has “huge potential”.

“I will propose to the president for him to take over the acting role of the Bersatu youth chief if Syed Saddiq has been found to have violated the party’s discipline," he said.

Redzuan also noted that its secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahaya would also perhaps be replaced for violating party discipline.

He added that as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed had resigned as the party’s chairman, thus, under the party’s constitution, he needed to be re-elected according to the party’s election process.

“There is no issue that Dr Mahathir is the party’s chairman because he has resigned.

“In the (party’s) constitution, a person who has quit or is dismissed can come back to nominate themselves according to the party’s election process.

“Whatever announcement made by the secretary-general is against the party, and I advise the secretary-general to stop issuing statements that could confuse party members including the public.

“We do not want to play politics anymore. We want to build the country, ” he said.

Redzuan added that there were only three Bersatu members that were against Muhyiddin.

He said they were Dr Mahathir, Syed Saddiq and Mukhriz.
