BANGKOK: Thai stocks fell almost 3 percent on Tuesday after a deadly bomb blast in central Bangkok which the government called a bid to destroy the economy.

BANGKOK: Two Malaysians have been confirmed to be among at least 16 people killed in a bomb blast in central Bangkok which also injured dozens others.
The Malaysian fatalities were confirmed by a Malaysian embassy official in the Thai capital.
The explosion at about 7pm (8pm Malaysian time) Monday occurred at the Ratchaprasong intersection, near the famous Erawan Shrine and Bangkok's colourful and high-street shopping.
It also damaged several cars and motorcycles. It was also reported that street vendors along the road were believed to be among the victims of the explosion.
Thai police chief Gen Somyot Poompanmouag said 16 people died as a result of the bomb blast, including possibly China and Philippine nationals.
Other police sources said the victims might also include visitors from Japan and Hong Kong.
Somyot chaired a meeting at the police headquarters after visiting the site of the blast.

He had earlier said that the explosion was caused by a TNT bomb.
An unconfirmed report from a police source stated there might be two more unexploded bombs, indicating that those responsible wanted to cause major damage.
As at 9.30pm local time, 82 people were confirmed injured, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Erawan Emergency Medical Services Centre (EMS).
It collected the figures from 15 hospitals in Bangkok.
However, it was unable to confirm the number of fatalities.

Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok was a location of both protest site for the Red Shirt in 2010 and PDRC (The People Democratic Reform Committee) protest led by Suthep Thuaksuban in 2014, that eventually led to a military coup and removal of ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra.

Despite the bombing located not far from the Chitlom station of the rail service of Bangkok Train Service or popularly known skytrain, the service still continues.

Major Gen Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak, the deputy government spokesman said Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha had already been informed of the bomb explosion and he had instructed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to go to the area.

KOTA BARU: The situation with the ringgit is very different from the situation during the Asian financial crisis, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department explained that during the crisis, the ringgit slumped to a record low of nearly RM5 against the dollar and caused losses for all sectors across the board.

He added that the Gross Domestic Product also fell then.

“Therefore, the scenario from the 1997-1998 financial crisis is totally different from the ringgit slump against the American dollar. It is a mere business cycle and not a crisis,” Dr Wee told reporters after officiating the Federated Teochew Associations of Malaysia annual general meeting here on Monday.

He added that the value of the ringgit could also be profitable to those in the export trade and sourced raw materials locally.

Ringgit depreciate due to yuan ok understood but becoz of political situation, sentiment is making foreigners to sell d shares which is dwindling d Klci index hence ringgit getting weaker!

Our ministers r unproductive, never give work for their brain.I am not racialistic, d influx of chinese torists r going to Indonesia, Thailand etc, i feel d cabinet post should be given to a chinese. They must increase d allocation on advertisement etc, well, approval is coming soon for free visa upon arrival. The minister must work hard becoz d revenue is plenty especiall when crude n palm oil price hv hit d bottom.A lot of major projects like MRT/LRT is in progress, plenty of capital is required. The current effort to woo tourists is slow, all i can see is lazy brain n too much of unpriduvtive politics.

For example if d chinese from China r allowed to just carry d bag n passport n get d visa upon arrival, we r making their life easy.Condition in Indonesia, Malaysia n Thailand more or less same, other countries give visa upon arrival but we sit n contemplating n in d process loosing billions...mmmmmmm
