KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research is maintaining its Overweight recommendation for the oil and gas (O&G) sector due to its importance in the government's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the contract pipeline arising from Petronas’s capex.
“Our top picks are SapuraKencana among the big caps and TH Heavy among the small caps,” it said on Tuesday.
The research house had, in light of the oil price weakness, checked with the companies in its oil & gas portfolio on the stability of their order books.
“The feedback is all-around positive, with the managements assuring us that their companies' contractual terms and rates are intact, and that they are not tied to the oil price,” it said.
To recap, Malaysian oil & gas companies are service providers with operations in various segments along the value chain, from retail and distribution in the downstream to seismic and marine support in the upstream.

“If you truly believe your prospects are bright and you’d like to return capital to long term holders of your stock, it is an excellent time to buy back shares,” said Kim Forrest, senior equity research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh.
“It would seem stupid to let this opportunity pass.”
November buybacks would by no means be a novelty. Goldman Sachs data show that, in the last seven years excluding 2008, November accounted for about 14 per cent of the yearly buyback activity, the most for any month.
About eight per cent of buybacks happened in October during that period and 10 per cent in December.
The market is entering the busiest part of earnings season, with results due from 128 S&P 500 companies, including six Dow components.
“This week is one of the busiest we have, so that unlocks a lot of buyback programmes after that’s over,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities, here.
He said the impact of those post-earnings buybacks has been consistent in the past years as “companies have been buying stock pretty aggressively”.
If buying ahead of what could be a good opportunity for companies themselves to purchase their stock is not a good enough reason, fundamentals are also on the bulls’ side.

There could be a net foreign inflow situation in the fourth quarter as foreigners take cognisance of the government’s effort to reign in budget deficits while promoting economic growth by targeting specific high value- added activities.
Investors should buy on weakness fundamentally solid high beta stocks in the domestic sectors that will benefit from Economic Transformation Programme (ETP)- related initiatives and improved external demand, especially with disposable income rising.
While neutral on property, there are pockets of opportunities for developers like Huayang and Sentoria that cater for the affordable segment. Mah Sing has sizeable projects along the growth corridors that will benefit from the ETP.

A rebound in crude oil prices mitigated the downbeat sentiment on the local equity market last week as investors returned last Friday to nibble on some badly beaten blue chips and oil and gas stocks.
The strong pullback emboldened hopes for a continued revival this week and could be supported by a similar recovery on Wall Street last Friday.
While it is understood that last week’s correction was driven by external factors, it is noteworthy to point that fundamentally nothing has changed externally to warrant a change in mood when the index rebounded.
