Futures climbed as much as one per cent to RM2,329 (US$703) a tonne on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives, the highest level for a most-active contract since July 14. Prices were at RM2,324 by the mid-day break. A close at RM2,315 would be 20 per cent more than the RM1,929 settlement on August 29, meeting the common definition of a bull market.
Palm rallied from a five-year low as Indonesia and Malaysia scrapped export taxes to lure buyers amid a global glut in cooking oils. Soybeans rose 6.7 per cent last week as rain slowed harvesting in the US and planting were delayed in Brazil. Palm prices may jump to RM2,500 by March as output drops, says Dorab Mistry, director at Godrej International Ltd. Malaysia last week said it would start the B7 biodiesel programme from November which will boost the use of palm biodiesel.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian executives expect merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the local market to be dominated by mid-market sized deals in the next 12 months.According to the bi-annual Ernst & Young Advisory Services’ (E&Y) South-East Asia Capital Confidence Barometer published recently, Malaysian executives, like their Asean counterparts who took part in the survey, expect deals of US$50mil (RM165mil) and below to drive M&A volumes in the next 12 months. It also said the main drivers for M&As locally is corporate earnings and access to financing. E&Y Malaysia’s transaction advisory services head George Koshy told StarBiz that corporate earnings outlook among Malaysians was expected to improve positively to the next 12 months. “There is a very bullish sentiment in the market place,” he said. He explained that the bullish sentiment and the confidence stems from the positive gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.4% in the second quarter of 2014, the double-digit growth in private investments which expanded by 12.1% and private consumption which increased by 6.5%. “Bank Negara is confident that GDP for this year will exceed its forecast,” Koshy said. According to the barometer, three out of four Malaysian executives surveyed expect the local M&A market to improve in the next 12 months. However, unlike their counterparts in five other Asean markets surveyed, Malaysian executives expect all M&A deals to be in the US$50mil and below range. This would be a sea-change among Malaysian executives, who six months ago expected 40% of deals to be above US$251mil and another 40% in the US$50mil to US$250mil range.Koshy said in the past 12 months, 46 deals out of 99 deals were done in Malaysia below US$50mil and the bulk of it derived from the industrial, consumer, energy and leisure sectors
