cloud computing

the online business sucks

but due to complexity of the business, they need to develop a sophisticated IT system to cope with it

about 10 years ago, they pioneered the use of cloud computing as an ongoing effort to improve efficiency

then they later discovered that the cloud computing thingy if sold to external parties can be very profitable

so they started commercialising it

the rest is history

very similar to airasia's story

during 2005 to 2015, oil price very high

airasia profit very lousy every year

but they keep on expanding by buying planes

those planes later became very valuable when oil price crashed and airline boomed

so they sold them off and unlock huge profit

in both cases, core business sucks, but the peripherals inadvertently became biggest value creator

if amazon and airasia gave up due to poor economics, they will never get the chance to enjoy the windfall from their peripheral business

every big name says they are big into cloud services......Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Google, Maxis, Telekom, SAP, Oracle...cloud is the new .com.
