This shows that CIMB profit is heavily reliant on loan repayments and is affected by the loan moratorium. Next quarter it will recover and be better.

Posted by cruger12345 > 2020-11-27 18:30 | Report Abuse

HOnestly speaking, I dont see it as bad as you guys think. The culprit is the loan loss provisioning. Lat Q Provided 1.5 Bil and this Q another 1.5 Bil. I think the worst could be over. In fact if everything goes as plan, the last Q which is the finaicial end Q you could see a provision write back which is norm for most of the banks. Provided the ECL and year end could write back if the condition is not as bad as expected.

The run up recently is too fast too furious without sufficient fundamental support, Monday will being it back to reality level and I think will remain down for the rest of the year.

Let’s be honest 2 huge doggy loans made to Singaporean companies are the reason for CIMBs bad performance. Both companies have been proven to be fraudulent and the auditors role is questionable! That said i suspect CIMB due diligence was not adequate...not surprising given that the regulators and other banks also have been mislead. The total cost is around 1.5 B plus tomCIMB shareholder. So much for fraudulent free Singaporean companies!

CIMB is now a high PE bank (21+), the tesla bank of Malaysia, the management team must be world class standard to deserve to such expensive valuation when there are so many cheaper alternatives.

Those disappointed sell please those forward looking can invest for turn around. Look like folks being critical without understanding the reasons for poor performance...which boils down mainly to 2 huge institutional NPL out of Singapore!

Posted by splendidkiller > 2020-11-28 10:21 | Report Abuse

If added back the ECL back to their Profit Before Tax, actually it is much better than last year 3Q. ECL is very subjective, CIMB could get this money back in future.

Icon8 If in the exam, all classmate pass the exam, but only you failed in the exam. So do you think is exam question got problem or is you got problem? So if other banks performance is much better than CIMB. So is bank industry got problem or is the CEO & management got problem?

This is just the case of new people (CEO) clearing doubtful bad debts by previous management so that he is taking over with strong balance sheet.

Current bad debts was the result of previous management.

Current revenue and cost cutting measures are the results of current management....and will result in strong performance in future QR.

Current high provisioning had already been highlighted to analysts during earlier briefing.....that was why the stock price fell to around RM3.....current buying is recovery play.

Cimb represent better turnaround opportunity. Given the latest nos, things will get better from now on.....any price correction will be an opportunity to make 20-30%! All depends on how you base investment decision!

We understand that in 3Q20, provisions remained elevated. Further provisions (management overlay) have been set aside for all the key markets. The group has taken further conservative provisions on a forwardlooking basis in Malaysia based on the increase in credit risk following the targeted assistance programme (TAP). Over in Singapore and Indonesia, provisions have been topped up for certain legacy loans. By segment, provisions for consumer loans in Malaysia were more than that of the other countries. Meanwhile, for non-retail loans, the group is closely monitoring a few borrowers that under the sectors directly impacted by Covid-19.
