If you don't fill the form or your form fail to reach Boardroom by the mentioned deadline, you will automatically receive dividends in cash.

The Fed could be a catalyst for bonds, and that could drive growth stocks in week ahead

(PUBLISHED FRI, MAR 12 20215:26 PM EST)

~ The bond market is once more the wild card for the stock market. It could rein in any gains in tech or growth stocks if yields continue to rise in the week ahead.

~ The Federal Reserve meets Tuesday and Wednesday. While it’s not expected to take any action, it could be a catalyst for a move in yields.

~ Value and cyclicals could continue to lead the market, as investors bet the vaccine rollout and fiscal stimulus will help the economy’s reopening.

Bonds could be volatile in the week ahead. If yields go higher, that could make it difficult for big tech and other growth stocks to gain traction.

Rising bond yields have been challenging growth stocks. Names like Apple, Tesla, and Amazon have been lagging as investors move to cyclical groups that do well in an economic recovery. Even so, the S&P 500 and the Dow both closed at record highs Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite was lower.

The Nasdaq, home to big tech, did gain 3% in the past week, but it is down 5.5% over the last month.

The bond market in the coming week will likely take its cues from the Federal Reserve, which meets Tuesday and Wednesday.

The central bank is expected to give a nod to much better growth. Bond pros are also watching to see whether Fed officials will tweak their interest rate outlook, which now does not include any rate hikes through 2023.

Fed ahead

“The markets have way too high expectations around what the Fed is going to do or say,” said Gregory Peters, head of multi-sector and strategy at PGIM Fixed Income. “I think the message is going to be consistent.”

He said Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is likely to sound dovish and is unlikely to give any time frames on when the central bank will change its bond-buying program or other policy.

Bond yields, which move opposite price, have been rising on an improving outlook for the economy.

That trade also showed up in the stock market, with the Dow up 4% for the week to end Friday at a record 32,778. Consumer discretionary stocks, which include retail, were among the best performers, up 5.7%, boosted by optimism that individuals will spend their $1,400 stimulus checks.

Yields were higher Friday after President Joe Biden said all adults would be eligible for a vaccine by May 1. The 10-year Treasury yield touched a high of 1.642% — its highest level in more than a year.

It is the key rate to watch since it affects mortgages and other consumer and business loans.

“The economy is going to be unbelievably strong this year — deficit spending, reopening, vaccines,” said Peters of PGIM.

“It looks like for next year, all the numbers are being revised higher,” he said. “So this thing could have some sustainable growth, so I think there’s going to be pressure on rates moving higher.”

Bond yields rose sharply over the past month. The rapid pace of the move has made stocks jittery as investors adjust to higher rates. The 10-year Treasury yield was at 1.16% on Feb. 12.

Growth vs. cyclicals

Over the last month, energy stocks have risen nearly 20%, financial stocks are up 10.2%, and industrials are up 7%. The S&P technology sector is down 5.4% over the last month, and communications services, which includes internet names was up 0.8%.

Higher rates are a challenge for tech and other growth stocks because those shares are expensive and have high price-earnings ratios.

“When rates are very low, valuations don’t matter to people,” said Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at Bleakley Global Advisors.

“If rates are low, there’s no penalty,” he said. “If rates start to go up, people become much more sensitive to valuations, and that’s what we’ve seen here.”

Scott Redler, partner with T3live.com, follows short-term stock market technicals and trades many of the growth stocks. Lately, however, he’s found himself sitting in many value names and cyclicals.

Next week will continue uptrend and might surpassed 5 if it can breach 4.75 which is it immediate resistance. But I believe this octopus will able to breach it after fixing the DRP price. Believe it or not, it will never go back down below 4.

"As it stands, with current undemanding valuations in place, HLIB believes that is an opportunity for investors to accumulate banking stocks.

Among the large banks, it likes Maybank (with a target price [TP] of RM9.20) over Public Bank (TP: RM4.25) and CIMB (TP: RM4.50) as Public Bank has rich valuations, higher foreign shareholdings and lower dividend yields, while CIMB is a riskier proposition given its less resilient asset quality."

Stupiak HLIB give this kind of comment on CIMB.

Banks world wide are rising in valuation ...for example U.K. and US they have gone past pre Covid levels despite huge bad debt provisions....this is because economic recovery will be led by banks,...it is matter of time when Malaysia follows ..CIMB and RHB are well positioned for big recovery due to write down particularly true for Cimb ...

Don’t agree with HILB re CIMB valuation ...it is undervalued and should be around 520 atleast if you factor wrote back of debt provisions ...most of these analysts have bias perhaps politically led!

Water flower....what happened 19/3 it is going to drop....did you mean rise! Making crazy statements is not necessary...the fact is US has pumped in trillions printed money to support its economy it was top performing stock market in 2020 and early 2021...now if there is a correction in US yes it may impact some stocks in Malaysia but beucase the recovery has been limited some shares like CIMB Genting etc ...will rise because they are undervalued based on historic perspective ...and on forward looking basis.

Riaz1954 I am water blower not flower .... the great blower here.
It is true what I said and time to teach you guys new term and new wording of "Quadruple witching " OR you can called it triple witching hours. Triple witching hour is the last hour of the stock market trading session on the third Friday of every March, June, September, and December. Those days are the expiration of three kinds of securities: Stock market index futures; Stock market index options; Stock options

Type this word in Google and study so you will prepare next time these 4 days of the year the western side mostly will drop and link the same with us Asian market

I know witching hour Water Blower.....but it does not automatically apply to all markets .....some have more value than others because they have not recovered fully in the first place.....so what I am saying is many factors take into account...any correction will be short lived in markets that have not fully recovered in the first place!

Posted by WaterBlower > 2021-03-22 09:31 | Report Abuse

It does not apply to all market but you can see it does affecting KLCI. I don't know about other Asian index but KLCI seems like a no brained index which 80-90% following US market trend all the time. Friday and today morning results is proven to you right?

All the stock prices are affected by many factors. So that's why there will be undervalued or overvalued stocks depending on how we play around.

AstraZeneca vaccine found to be 79% effective in U.S. trial, ‘no increased risk’ of blood clots

(PUBLISHED MON, MAR 22 20213:10 AM EDTUPDATED MON, MAR 22 20214:09 AM EDT)

~ The safety and efficacy analysis of the vaccine, published Monday, was based on 32,449 participants from a Phase 3 trial.

~ It comes shortly after a flurry of countries temporarily suspended use of the shot following reports of blood clots in some vaccinated people.

~ AstraZeneca said an independent data safety monitoring board identified no safety concerns related to the shot.

LONDON — The findings of a large U.S. trial have shown that the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford is 79% effective in preventing symptomatic illness and 100% effective against severe disease and hospitalization.

The safety and efficacy analysis of the vaccine, published Monday, was based on 32,449 participants from a Phase 3 trial.

By comparison, Moderna’s vaccine has been found to be more than 94% effective in preventing Covid, and Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine was found to be 95% effective.

AstraZeneca said it would continue to analyze the data and prepare for the primary analysis to be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration for emergency use authorization in the coming weeks.

It comes shortly after a flurry of countries temporarily suspended use of the shot following reports of blood clots in some vaccinated people. Health experts sharply criticized the move, citing a lack of data, while analysts expressed concern about the impact on vaccine uptake as the virus continues to spread.

Germany, France, Italy and Spain are among those to have resumed use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine after Europe’s drug regulator said its initial investigation of possible side effects concluded the shot is both safe and effective.

AstraZeneca said in a release Monday that an independent board identified no safety concerns related to the shot. They also conducted a specific review of blood clots as well as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), an extremely rare blood clot in the brain, with the help of an independent neurologist.

The data safety monitoring board “found no increased risk of thrombosis or events characterised by thrombosis among the 21,583 participants receiving at least one dose of the vaccine. The specific search for CVST found no events in this trial.”

‘Much-needed’ additional vaccination option

Ann Falsey, professor of medicine at University of Rochester School of Medicine, U.S., and co-lead principal investigator for the trial, said: “This analysis validates the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as a much-needed additional vaccination option, offering confidence that adults of all ages can benefit from protection against the virus.”

The pharmaceutical giant said the shot was well tolerated and its effectiveness was found to be consistent across ethnicity and age. Notably, the Oxford-AstraZeneca shot was 80% effective in preventing Covid in participants aged 65 years and above.

“These results add to the growing body of evidence that shows this vaccine is well tolerated and highly effective against all severities of COVID-19 and across all age groups,” Mene Pangalos, executive vice president of BioPharmaceuticals R&D at AstraZeneca, said in a statement.

“We are confident this vaccine can play an important role in protecting millions of people worldwide against this lethal virus,” Pangalos said.

Among the participants in the interim analysis, roughly 20% were 65 years of age and above, while approximately 60% had comorbidities associated with an increased risk for progression of severe Covid, such as diabetes or cardiac disease.

There is no doubt that CIMB results will be much better than 2020......this is a fact, to what extent is the only question. I expect CIMB to produce the best turnaround results and profit growth amongst all banks.....this will prompt price to rally....time to invest for that time which is not too far off....I expect better results to filter through 2nd half onwards. We are about to enter 2nd quarter.
