Guan Eng urges banks to waive principal interest during six-month moratorium
Saturday, 28 Aug 2021 11:51 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — The banking industry should waive interest payments during the loan moratorium period since the second quarter of 2021 has indicated a reasonable profit margin for banks, said former finance minister Lim Guan Eng.

He said taking interest and profits from distressed borrowers is not really the “Keluarga Malaysia” or “Malaysian Family” way as advocated by newly-appointed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“The banking industry is expected to significantly improve on their profitability this year compared to 2019, as shown by Maybank’s net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2021, doubling to RM1.96 billion from RM941.73 million last year,” Lim said in a statement.

He added that Maybank recorded RM2.39 billion net profits in the first quarter of 2021, compared with RM2.05 billion last year.
here is a need for the winners of the Covid-19 pandemic and economic recession to help those who lost their jobs and businesses as well as struggling to find work or survive. One of the winners is the banking industry, whose profits continue to rise.

“The banking industry recorded after-tax profits of RM32.3 billion in 2019 and more than RM23 billion in 2020 despite the economic recession,” Lim said.

The Bagan MP asked how many companies will be in the same comfort zone as Maybank in enjoying better profits this year compared to last year.

“Whilst focus is placed on winning the battle against Covid-19 and saving lives, immediate attention must be given to saving livelihoods of countless Malaysians and businesses destroyed by the current economic recession.

“The current government must stop the double standards in enforcement, the policy flip-flops, the U-turns in SOPs and failures to vaccinate earlier, implement robust testing programme and mass screenings,” he said.

Lim said it is imperative that the lessons of the past must not be forgotten.

“Bloomberg placed Malaysia last out of 53 of the world’s largest economies surveyed for Bloomberg’s monthly Covid Resilience Ranking, in the country’s ability to provide some sense of normalcy amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Everyone knows what has gone wrong despite the imposition of serial movement control orders and the Emergency Proclamation,” he said.

It was proposed since last year.
will it happen? very unlikely
It will not solve current problems.
It definitely will create havoc in the financial circles.
Business risk is as such.
When all the businessmen making money silently for the last 20 years of economic growth, no one ask them to fork out some of their profits in poverty elimination by enacting rules, and now some ( certainly not all, judging from the profits reported in the listed entities ) facing hardship, they should negotiate with the banks individually to restructure their debts if it is still viable, if not, just fold.
1998 many faces the same predicament, especially, but many recovered to fight another day.
Requesting others to pay for the risk you take is unfair, as behind those banks there are hundred of thousands of shareholders too.

only so-hai will believe interest will be waived for the moratorium , because everyone will rush for the apply including me.

read this BNM article carefully , WHY government can't do that.
https://www.nst.com.my/business/2021/08/717801/waiving-interest-loans-during-moratorium-will-impact-banks-says-bnm-governor

If bank also not giving out interest for your saving for the period of moratorium and EPF give you 2% dividend only , you will say ....errrrrrr... hold on .... don't do it.

The end results of waiving of interest would be disastrous for Malaysia when Malaysia & Banking rating being downgraded.

More businesses close shop because lending more difficult and ton of jobs being cut , market plummets to 1k point because investors pull out.

This is very very likely because nobody know when is the end of Covid and there will be no ending of so-called "waiving of interest" request.

No one dare do it in the world ... Malaysia ???? This is nuclear button .... press it die altogether.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): Foreign buying of Malaysian equities extended for the third week and surged to RM964.33 million last week, from a paltry RM6.71 million the prior week.

Meanwhile, it said local institutions bought RM19.16 million net of local equities, with retailers as net sellers to the tune of RM25.86 million.

The research house said foreign investors were net buyers every day of the week.

It said the largest foreign inflow was recorded last Thursday to the tune of RM310.79 million, while the inflow of RM6.7 million last Monday was the smallest.

“As for retailers, they were net sellers every day of the week except on Monday.

“The largest net selling by retailers was recorded last Tuesday and the smallest net selling was on Friday to the tune of RM48.43 million and RM16.88 million respectively.

“Cumulatively, for the week, retailers net sold RM113.96 million worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia,” it said.

MIDF said that meanwhile, local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net selling to the tune of RM850.37 million.

It said local institutions were net sellers every day of the week, with the largest net selling on Thursday to the tune of RM290.41 million.

Since the beginning of 2021, cumulatively, retailers were the only net buyers of the local equity market to the tune of RM9.46 billion.

Local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of RM4.46 billion and RM5 billion respectively.

“In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and foreign investors recorded weekly movements of -3.82%, 9.89% and 16.82% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV),” it said.

in the US the US Govt pays your entire loan for you until zero balance,
no need moratorium or screaming for interest waiver.

Malaysians are still screaming for interest waiver and withdrawing from EPF

That is the price of corruption.

Posted by Maverickeking > 2021-09-02 13:29 | Report Abuse

EPF shouldnt be selling the shares that would cause unhealthy swing in the market. They should keep the price has minimal ripple effect on the overall market. Why can't they sell other investment instrument like bonds? EPF should be more diversified in its investment.
