house, I when I worked as a civil engineer involved in the dam constructions from feasibility studies until the completion of a dam and the first filling of water many years ago. There are definitely many issues in dam construction. What you have mentioned are the small ones.

Any development work will come with many social and environment issues. They are more profound in the developed world, but not so much in the developing world where many people are living from hand to mouth. Hence development is more important than those environmental problems.

i agree.. considering the state of Laos, I m sure the govt is desperate to get this power plant up in order to start selling the electricity and generating revenue.. hope there is no more delay on the project...

This environmental problem is not easy to deal

Mekong river passes through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam...it is not an issue about a nation only....it is an issue for the 5 nations involved...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mekong & http://www.mrcmekong.org/

the river stream starts at China's Yunnan province....it passes through 6 nations to be precise

ur existing exposure for your previous dam feasible study limited to a nation only? aiya, that one sap sap sui la....the country politicians can always overwrite that, if in bolehland, even easier....

this one, 6 nations.....they even got Mekong River Commission....you want these 6 nations politicians to overwrite all the obstacles smoothly - mixture of communist & democracy nations some more ? wanna bet? not so easy....coz everyone will want to protect their own country interest...

and bcoz most of these countries are so poor....their economy are highly dependent on this river.....no river = no economy

the delay is inevitable...

nightshade.. u bring up valid points, but how effective is this so called council.. from what I read, there is precedent, where Laos has ignored concerns from its neighbours and built an even bigger dam the Xayaburi dam (1950MW).... bottom line it all depends on how much Laos depends on its neighbours for aid and what it does to pleaes them...
