as long as no more right issue for MAS like the recent one in 2013. Investors would like to play MAS shares for M & A , etc... Also, firefly is one of the cash cows of MAS which can be sold or listed :) Firefly targets 20pc passenger growth
By BILQIS BAHARI | bt@mediaprima.com.my
SUBANG: FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd, which operates the Firefly airline, is targeting a 20 per cent passenger growth this year from two million passengers last year.
Chief executive Ignatius Ong said the airline will focus on capturing the leisure travellers market this year as it has a strong following from this group.
“The two million passengers we carried last year were a mix of local and foreign passengers, but most of them are were business travellers,” he said on the sidelines of Firefly’s 7th Anniversary celebration yesterday.
Ong said Firefly will focus on strengthening its network in Peninsular Malaysia as well as Asean, particularly Indonesia and Thailand, this year by increasing flight frequencies.
The airline, for example, plans to increase the frequency of its Subang-Penang route from 13 flights daily to 20 flights.
“But our growth depends on how fast we get the new aircraft,” Ong said, adding that Firefly expects to receive two new ATR 72-600s by year-end.
The airline currently has 14 aircraft comprising ATR 72-500s and ATR 72-600s.
In conjunction with its seventh anniversary, Firefly is offering all-in return flight tickets at RM77 for all its domestic destinations.
The Star report today-National union of flight attendants msia interferring in mas ' s new cock pit safety issues again!who runs mas?attendants or management?
Unions are one of the hindrance to MAS's turnaround... the reversal of mas-airasia alliance was also due to union if not mistaken, politicians were afraid of losing the votes of union members if not mistaken :)
up2khazanah, political will to change, not afraid to face the union for reducing excess staff, not afraid to renegotiate or cancel any unfair contracts, etc etc... just pray haha
Just do what u like ,i am no longer holding any mas share! But i still feel the pinch if raayat 's hardearned money is used to bail out any finsncial crisis again!
Fundamentally, this counter has exhausted all its avenues. And with the recent MH370 challenge, it makes things worst. MAS is now more than just a business entity but a political, economical and national entities. There are just too many roles to play and juggle. And should AJ resign in months to come, there would be another knee jerk reaction to the price.
The only factor that could lift the counter would be some speculative news on M&A or bailout or taking over just like what happen to Proton. But for how long and how much? No one really knows. Personally, think can leave this counter for sometime until they sorted out the MH370. I will lock whatever remaining shares I have in this counters and buried them for sometime until the right time to dig them out back and start trading.
Worrying state of our nation CT Ali | April 4, 2014
Our people, our businesses and our government are fueling growth by unsustainable borrowing. COMMENT
Economy-Malaysia-300x202On the economic front Malaysia is in crisis. Cars and houses are literally burying Malaysians under a sea of debt.
Easy credit and low lending rates from our banks mean that our household debt to GDP has been growing at a rate of 12 percent annually since 2008 – making Malaysia household debt to GDP ratio at 83 percent, Southeast Asia’s highest.
Forty-seven percent of Malaysians are now in “serious debts” having to spend 30 percent of their gross income paying for their car, house and credit card debts.
Since 2008:
· Loans increased by 80 percent in the private sector.
· Car registration is up by 50%.
· Year on year increase in property prices.
· Mortgage loan accounts for 50% of household debt.
In the business sector, corporate bonds and bank loans are at 95.8 percent of GDP in 2013.
This mountain of debt in Malaysian households and its business sector is part of the reason for the continued growth of Malaysia’s USD$303 billion economy at an average six per cent in recent years.
The other factor fueling this growth is our government incurring fiscal deficits for the past 15 years to bolster the country’s economy.
Today Malaysia’s public debt-to-GDP stands at 53.2 percent – second only to Sri Lanka among Asian countries.
What all these say is simply this: Our people, our businesses and our government are fueling growth by unsustainable borrowing – and we are all heading for a fall even as another Asian Financial Crisis similar to the one in 1977 looms in the not too distant future.
We need a strong, confident and knowledgeable federal government in Putrajaya to steer us through this coming financial crisis.
Given the prevailing political demise of Umno’s hegemony over all things politics in Malaysia as reflected in the 13th general election when the Barisan Nasional coalition lost its popular mandate to govern to Pakatan Rakyat, that does seem a remote possibility.
On the political front, political power in Malaysia is no longer the purview of race, religion or money.
Ordinary Malaysians
It now lies in the hands of ordinary Malaysians of all races, all religions driven not by any particular political persuasion but more by the belief that in their hands now lie the future of their country.
They are not content to just wait for the next election to cast their votes to decide who will form government.
No! This generation of Malaysian are now taking things into their own hands and dragging an obstinate BN and Pakatan Rakyat screaming into the future that they want.
A future where corrupt, arrogant and irresponsible politicians have no place in government and where government is held accountable for their every action.
Apart from the unsustainable borrowing by households, the business sector and the government, there is a need to hold this BN government accountable for the illicit money outflow amounting to RM251.6 billion in just 2013.
If we go back to the period between 2000 to 2008, the sum of RM930 billion was lost in the same way.
What portion of this illicit money outflow can be attributed to the connivance of corrupt politicians and their cronies remains to be seen but suffice to say that the illicit outflow is much greater than the inflow of foreign investment into Malaysia.
All this is happening at a time when Malaysia’s current account surplus is deteriorating due to weaker export earnings.
All is not well with the state of our nation today.
YOURSAY ‘They now have a first-hand experience of what we had to put up with.’
DCA chief does it again, media livid
Idon'tlikekangkung: This is the usual problem when you appoint incompetent people to high positions because of their connections to people in high places.
If this had been a local situation, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman would have been able to get away with it - indeed he might even have come out smelling like roses if the government-controlled media had their way.
But under intense local and international scrutiny, the incompetence surfaces. Resorting to bully tactics will not work.
CNN had an article about whether this whole fiasco was hurting Malaysia's credibility. Well, the truth is that it is these incompetents who hurt the country's image.
But I guess they are just following their leader who often does not respond to questions either. What a sorry lot we have in power.
Ipohcrite: I sympathise with the foreign media who are subjected to such shoddy and irresponsible conduct by the DCA chief. The foreign media now has a first-hand experience of what we right-thinking Malaysians had to put up with all these years.
Malaysia is a sham democracy.
Sabahan: It is very clear to the world that in Malaysia, which does not practice meritocracy and transparency, civil servants are often promoted beyond their ability.
This is shown in the press conferences held, where the DCA director-general and RMAF (Royal Malaysian Air Force) chief were clearly out of their depth and their grilling by the foreign press, although painful to watch, makes us very worried about Malaysia's future.
Apacerita: Azharuddin is in a defensive mode and that's not a good sign nor will it help him. In fact, his action aggravates more resentment towards this crisis.
If he could not handle the pressure, please resign and save Malaysia from more embarrassment.
Hplooi: And the Umno propaganda machine is promoting the idea that the foreign media (especially Chinese media) fallout is due to opposition bad-mouthing Malaysia. Even without opposition comments, the government team is 'hanging' themselves very well.
Already Umno cyber-troopers are lobbing grenades of 'patriotism' and the so-called unpatriotic behaviour of opposition (read: Chinese) electorates.
This meme will be sold to the hilt to the rural electorate further widening the divide between the Malays and the rest. I hope PKR and PAS has strategy to counter such nefarious move by the Umno cabal.
CQ Muar: These are third world brainless leaders who can't even handle foreign journalists.
Doesn’t PM Najib Razak realise the whole world is mocking the 'type' of moronic leaders Malaysia has? Absolutely no class and a shame compared to other countries' world-class leaders.
Understandably, this is the result and product of cronies favoured and picked by the elite to manage and administer the country.
Such morons were probably graduates 'churned out in droves' and awarded degrees by some government-owned universities.
Lamborghini: Azharuddin, you just don't have the brains, the maturity, the experience and the competence to represent Malaysia before the world's press. You are causing so much of embarrassment to yourself and the nation through your actions.
Please don't hold any more media briefings if you are not prepared to say anything useful or helpful. You are such a disgrace. Have some dignity and resign because you obviously don’t have what it takes.
Ferdtan: Where have all the responsible leaders gone to? PM Najib went south to Perth and acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, the face of the missing plane crisis committee, gone north to Hawaii. So who is in charged now?
Has Najib appoint a higher official at least of a ministerial position to overlook the situation while both of them are gone? Or they just left like that without any clear-cut instruction leaving people like Azharuddin not knowing what to do?
If he answers the questions from reporters wrongly he gets into trouble, so now he decided to avoid them, and with that he will get into even bigger trouble.
This is what happens when there is a lack or no leadership provided by Najib and Hishammuddin.
Give Him A Break: I observe that many of the remarks by readers are very personal. I find Azharuddin’s standard of English acceptable although he may not speak like Najib who has an English boarding school accent.
About the Balotteli example, he was merely trying to emphasise the point that a person's look would not readily reveal one’s nationality. The press has quoted him out of context and twisted the story to make him appeared like an idiot.
I can see that he is trying his best; I also can see that he is highly stressed given the amount of bad press that he has encountered.
Let's be fair. He may be the DG but he is also human, he is also somebody's son, someone's father and somebody's husband. He too has feeling. Let's not be too harsh on him; give him a break.
Kangkung: After almost of 60 years of having Pyongyang-style news conferences, now Umno is faced with real journalists who are not from party-owned Utusan Malaysia
With no trace of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 found thus far, aviation lawyers warn that MAS is wide open to potential lawsuits from the relatives of those on board.
MAS cannot go on running into losses either have to be privatised or put for sale. Should this happen what shall be the sale price? NTA value 55ct and of course the buyer will resort to bank loan and the bank will provide loan based on NTA value. As a gesture the bank may give 20cts on top of the NTA value of 55ct + 20ct =75cts. As an investor i have right to know, i am also an accountant can anybody there answer my queries and please take note Khazanah paid a huge amount for rights issue are they going to sell at 75cts or keep absorbing the losses.
MAS is having a strong Union. Everybody should respect the union because today we are able to work with pride because of the blood shed by our forefathers but obviously not at the expense of productivity. Everybody should work hard for wages n fringe benefits given by the Employer or indirectly by shareholders. If the employees are going to be lazy hoping Union will protect them, then the union should go.All the employees should work very hard, and you wont die by working hard....try to bring MAS back to its "glory days" when the share price at one time was about 5.00.
Why are they banning Noah...? If you ban Noah and claim to be unislamic, then don't take and use sin tax from gambling, don't do business with China or India......
MAS should just cut the corruption and expensive sub contracts to govt cronies to save money. That's the way it should work. Mas is not like Petronas where bn can continuously plunder for money. Oil business is always better than airlines business.
They won't restructure because there will be retrenchment of over hiring by the management. Just like DBKL is a measure to protect the workers with tax payers money. And a meant to secure more votes in future elections. They don't bother about the risks involved
Malaysia Airlines has cancelled one out of two daily flights on the Kuala Lumpur-Beijing route effective May 1, presumably due to a drop in demand for flights between China and Malaysia in the wake of the MH370 tragedy.
The daily redeye flight with the flight number MH318 departing Kuala Lumpur for Beijing at 12:25am has been removed from Malaysia Airlines’ online booking engine for departures from May 1 onwards.
With no trace of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370 found thus far, aviation lawyers warn that the national carrier is wide open to lawsuits from the relatives of those on board.
Brisbane-based lawyer Joseph Wheeler (left) explained that under the Montreal Convention of 1999 (updated in 2009), airlines were strictly liable to damages of up to XDR113,100 (approximately RM575,000).
XDR is a monetary unit commonly used by international organisations and treaties, including the Montreal Convention.
It is based on the value of a mix of major currencies reviewed by the International Monetary Fund every five years, and currently includes the US Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, and the British Pound.
To fend off suits claiming damages higher than XDR113,100, according to the convention, MAS will have need to prove in court that the loss of the aircraft was not due to its own negligence, or that a third party was solely responsible for it.
"The evidence isn’t there for them to argue that they weren’t at fault. They can’t argue that something else was at fault, like an aircraft component or a terrorist bombing - something that is potentially not in their control.
"We are thinking that families will have that high level of proven loss damage available to them if there is no debris, because MAS hasn't got a chance to prove itself," Wheeler told Malaysiakini in an interview yesterday.
Malaysia is one of the signatories to the Montreal Convention, which spells out liabilities in event of damage or loss of air cargo, baggage, or passengers. On the other hand, crew members are covered by workers' compensation schemes.
Without the means to defend themselves, Wheeler said, the next-of-kin of the passengers aboard MH370 could be awarded the full amount of whatever sum they can prove as their losses.
The court will consider factors such as loss of income, the deceased's likely future income, loss of support, and how much the next-of-kin are dependent on the deceased.
"It is to the extent of what you can prove that you have lost, so one family may be able to prove a million dollars, another family may be able prove five," said the lawyer from the Australian firm Shine Lawyers.
Wheeler said he is representing the relatives of some of those on board the aircraft, but declined to disclose who or how many, citing client-counsel confidentiality.
Asked about a potential act of terrorism, Wheeler said it could still be argued that MAS and the KL International Airport security should have taken certain steps to prevent this.
Shine Lawyers manager, Patrick Nunan said this approach has been used in suits before, such as those following the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New Yorik and the Pentagon in Washington in the United States.
Despite arguing that MAS is an easy target, Nunan nevertheless said the MH370 case was extremely complex.
"This is probably the most complex case that I know of in the last 30 to 40 years," he said.
"In that period of time, you have probably the greatest number of serious aircraft crashes. This (MH370) outshines Air France significantly,” he said, referring to Flight 447 that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009.
Although it took two years to recover that aircraft's black box, pieces of it had been found much earlier and there were other indications of problems.
"They were able to find debris in a couple of weeks. They knew the location within a couple of days. So even though it took two years to pull the aircraft out, a lot could be done and pieced together, based on the location where the pieces were found," Wheeler said.
Nunan (right) added that once a piece of wreckage is found, crash investigators typically go to the extent of drawing out an outline of the aircraft in an hangar, and try to piece it together like a jigsaw puzzle and figure out what had happened.
MAS Flight 370 went missing on March 8 when it was mysteriously diverted from its original flight path to Beijing and is presumed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.
Despite what has been considered as the largest search operation in aviation history, no wreckage or debris has been found since it vanished almost a month ago. It was carrying 12 crew members and 227 passengers.
