KUALA LUMPUR (May 11): UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd’s subsidiary Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB) which is involved in manufacturing Toyota vehicles, has resumed its assembly operations.
In a statement today, UMW Toyota said this was pursuant to the approval given by the Selangor State Government in relation to the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that was announced on May 4.
The company said ASSB had suspended all operations from March 18 when the Movement Control Order (MCO) was activated nationwide as a measure to break the transmission of the COVID-19 coronavirus and will re-commence its operations from today.
UMW Toyota Motor president K Ravindran said with the resumption of operations, the firm hopes to add momentum to the automotive industry and business moving forward.
“As with all companies allowed to resume their operations at full capacity, there are strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which must be followed.
“ASSB will fully adhere to these SOPs for the protection and health of its approximate 2000 employees working at its facilities,” he said.
Ravindran said the SOPs include establishing distances of 1 metre or more between workers; regular temperature checks; provision and use of hand sanitizers and face masks; and sanitisation of various areas around the plant three times daily.
He said where necessary, working hours and work flows are adjusted to create a safe environment.
Meanwhile, UMW Toyota Motor deputy chairman Akio Takeyama said Toyota Motor Corporation is also very serious about providing safe and healthy conditions for all employees.
“As a member of the global Toyota family, ASSB can therefore draw on healthcare advice and best practices from TMC regarding additional measures that can be taken here in Selangor,” he said.
Selangor forms aerospace division, confident of expediting industry's recovery process

SHAH ALAM (May 18): Selangor, which houses 62% of the 230 aerospace companies in Malaysia, is confident of expediting the industry's recovery process following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said this will be overseen by the state's newly-formed Selangor Darul Ehsan Aerospace Industry Coordination Office (S-Daico).
"Of course the MCO (movement control order) and Covid-19 have impacted our plan [at this stage] but I think with S-Daico, we can ensure that the aerospace hub in Selangor recovers earlier than those in other places," he told a press conference today.
"Although the number of aerospace players [in the state] is small, the value is significant. The industry was allowed to operate during Phase 3 of the MCO and this contributed greatly to the business chain as a whole," he added.
Among the aerospace companies listed on Bursa Malaysia are SAM Engineering & Equipment (M) Bhd, UMW Holdings Bhd and Destini Bhd. The three Main Market-listed counters have lost 34.1%, 52.7% and 36% in value year to date.
Parked under Invest Selangor Bhd, S-Daico was set up to establish Selangor as the main destination for the aerospace industry regionally under a 10-year action plan until 2030.
The new division has been tasked with providing information, advisory services and potential investment opportunities to industry players. It will also coordinate and monitor all aerospace development projects in the state, covering financial allocation aspects.
Amirudin said five strategic activities had been identified as the main drivers of the industry under the Selangor Aerospace Action Plan 2020-2030, including maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), manufacturing and engineering and design.
"In 2017, MRO activities contributed RM6.2 billion to national revenue, of which over 62% were contributed by companies in Selangor, while manufacturing activities contributed RM6.6 billion.
"These two biggest activities in the industry are expected to expand threefold and generate a total of RM20.4 billion and RM21.2 billion in revenue respectively by 2030," he said.
It was reported that the country's aerospace industry raked in RM14.4 billion in revenue in 2018, up 6.7% from a year earlier. The amount was largely contributed by exports of aircraft parts and components which tripled to RM8.48 billion from RM2.88 billion in 2014.
Amirudin said Sungai Buloh-based SME Aerospace Sdn Bhd is among the world's major suppliers of aircraft wings and components for global plane-makers, including Boeing and Airbus.
Under the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, it is envisioned that Malaysia will be the leading aerospace nation in Southeast Asia and serves as an integral part of the global market with an annual revenue of RM55.2 billion by 2030.
In August 2015, the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (Naico) was established with the primary objective of overseeing the implementation of the strategies and initiatives in the blueprint.
Amirudin said that given Selangor's significant contribution to the country's aerospace revenue, S-Daico was formed to complement Naico, a unit under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).

UMW stock will go up as recovery of economy needs them. Come on friends, it's not only Toyota they are selling! Heavy machinery for industrial activity. Do not be so ignorant and respect the departed. It's so crude to say CEO dies because of EPF short selling. Have some dignity in business. You like people to say that about your family?
100% sales tax exemption on new CKD cars, 50% exemption for CBU until end of the year bring good news UMW and DRB-HICOM. Car price drop for perodua , Toyota , Proton.
