Covid 19 has distrupt the global food chain ....how long will the supply chain related to sugar remains intact ? will sugar demand rise due to lockdown in India, Philiphines....etc affect production of sugar? How many countries are importers of sugar ? Will sugar price spike when demand is high ?

KUALA LUMPUR (April 14): The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has ceased to become a substantial shareholder in Top Glove Corp Bhd after disposing of 3.08 million shares in the rubber glove manufacturer.

EPF needs liquidity asap to helps those B40 withdrawal of RM 500 per member ...looks like MSM not spare but another man ‘s poison is another man Sugar !

Raw sugar average price us12.8c per pound in 2019, we estimate us11c in 2020.so us 1.8c per pound cheaper than 2019. us 1.8c p. pound = usd 39.68 per ton = rm 170 per metric ton. MSM can produce 880,000 metric ton of sugar , so the cost of raw material can save up to rm 149m

Posted by oldchinaman > 2020-04-14 22:38 | Report Abuse

They should do some hedging, since the raw sugar is so cheap now, . but these people are always TIDUR....

Sugar is a strategic commodity whose consumption continues to increase from year to year to keep up with the population growth, the increase in per capita consumption and the expansion of the sugar industry itself. Therefore, the government must pay attention to the development of this industry. Sugar consumption continues to increase from year to year, and stronger growth has been noted in refined sugar consumption. Higher growth in refined sugar consumption has been driven by competition in the market.

The continued expansion of the food and beverage industry has boosted the demand for sugar in the country. Sugar consumption is expected to continue to increase in the coming years.
The COVID-19 outbreak has driven people to stockpile food, including sugar. Thus, sugar stocks have thinned and its purchase has been restricted. At present, due to this outbreak, Scarcity is causing sugar prices to soar, consequently the government has had to take measures to address this sooner or later

Turning sugar into hand sanitizer
Tuesday, April 14th 2020, 3:18 PM CDT
The sugar cane industry is a big proponent to the Louisiana state economy. One product made with this crop is rum. This Week in Louisiana Ag presents this video highlighting how the Three Roll Estate distillery is switching production from rum to sanitizer, to help keep individuals healthy and aid in battling the coronavirus pandemic.

If global raw sugar price increase, it would be disadvantage to MSM. Need to fork out more to import raw sugar but not able to increase price when selling to end user (due to sugar being price control item)

As per the latest report by IMARC Group, titled “Sugar Substitutes Market: Global Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunity and Forecast 2020-2025,” the global sugar substitutes market size reached US$ 15.7 Billion in 2019. Sugar substitutes are chemical or plant-based substances that replicate the taste of sugar. They are non-nutritive, high-intensity sweeteners, which are utilized for sweetening or enhancing the flavor of different food products and beverages, such as jellies, candies, puddings, canned food, baked goods, dairy products, soft drinks and powdered drink mixes. They are around 200 times sweeter than sugar and can help in weight loss, promoting dental health and maintaining the blood sugar levels.

Whole world into recession if u still don't get the memo. Unemployment rate has risen & still rising. The B40 and even M40 are struggling...not to mention many SMEs are on the brink of closure and financial distress due to business shock & shutdown by this pandemic. The average rakyat will cut down spending and businesses will sell less. Sugar demand will be affected for sure. If before this covid-9 threat that MSM is already suffering huge losses, u think now that MSM is going to post some magic positive numbers in its next few quarterly earnings? Use your brain.

It's a good thing that EPF continues to trim its stakes in such poorly run company. EPF has to take care of the rakyat's monies not to stay invested or invest into politically swayed companies. Now PN is just similar to BN...they will be milking MSM off with bad deals. Holding onto it is not a wise move.

why listen to lowballers ? This company used to belongs to the RICHEST Malaysian who sold to FGV at MYR1.22 Billion in 2011. Its easy to make huge profit once sugar price is revised due to global demand or Gov feels its about time to revise bcoz even country like Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and even India selling their refined sugar more expensive than us . Malaysia has to decide on lowering Gov subsidies due to market forces

Even when Gov who has not been Lowering the SUGAR subsidies but the rakyat has been overpaying for their beverages at restaurants or kedai kopi ..how mush do you pay for your kopi/teh now? ...its just a matter of time ...by then this share will see its glory days once again
