S&P 500, Dow book highest close in 7 weeks as investors shrug off weak GDP number.
Last Updated: July 28, 2022 at 4:42 p.m. ET
U.S. stocks fished higher on Thursday, with large-cap benchmark S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average booking their highest close in roughly seven weeks as investors digested second-quarter GDP data, a flurry of corporate earnings reports and the latest interest rate-hike from the Federal Reserve.
How did stocks do?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA gained 332.04 points, or 1.0%, to close at 32,529.63.
The S&P 500 index SPX rose 48.82 points, or 1.2%, finishing at 4,072.43.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP gained 130.17 points, or 1.1%, ending at 12,162.59.
On Wednesday, the Dow rose 1.4%, the S&P 500 increased 2.6% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 4.1%, its best one-day percentage gain since April 6, 2020. Stocks rallied sharply following the Fed’s latest rate-hike.
What drove markets
Stocks rallied Thursday following the release of data of second-quarter GDP, which showed that the U.S. economy had contracted by 0.9% between the beginning of April and end of June. The data marked a second consecutive quarter of contraction, following a minus 1.6% print for the first quarter of 2022. Stocks have recently greeted signs of a slowing economy with gains, as investors bet that weak data might pressure the Fed to slow the pace of interest rate hikes.
“What everyone can agree upon is that the economy is slowing rather quickly and that will keep the pressure on the Fed to tighten as much as they possibly can before they will need to go on hold,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA. “Stagflation is obviously here now and will ultimately force the Fed into a difficult decision as to when they may need to pause tightening.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday said the economy is slowing, but it’s still healthy by many measures. She said some slowdown in the economy is needed to help combat the highest inflation in almost 41 years.
“Most economists and most Americans have a similar definition of recession – substantial job losses and mass layoffs, businesses shutting down, private sector activity slowing considerably, family budgets under immense strain,” the Treasury chief said in a press conference on Thursday afternoon. “That is not what we’re seeing right now when you look at the economy. Job creation is continuing; household finances remain strong. Consumers are spending and businesses are growing.”
Weekly initial jobless claims fell by 5,000 to 256,000 in the week ended July 23, according to the latest weekly reading on the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits. However, the four-week average of new claims rose for the eight straight week.
The surge in stocks that began Wednesday has been fueled in part by Powell saying that interest rates are now in the range of neutral territory and that the pace of hikes may slow, though he left another 75 basis point hike in September as a possibility.
“Today’s GDP numbers will reinforce pessimism about both the state of the U.S. economy and the outlook for corporate profits,” David Kelly, chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, wrote in a note. “However, a small silver lining for markets is that an avowedly data-dependent Federal Reserve should see, in this weakness, a reason to be less aggressive in hiking rates in the rest of 2022.”
Corporate earnings also have been an important driver of markets this week, which is expected to be the busiest week of its kind for the quarter. Meta Platforms META, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, released its quarterly report late Wednesday, showing worse-than-forecast profit and sales and guided revenue below estimates in the current quarter.
Nearly 49% of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings through Thursday’s open. Of those companies 71.5% have beaten estimates, FactSet data shows.
Looking ahead, earnings are due from Apple AAPL, Amazon AMZN and Mastercard MA after Thursday’s market close. The June Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data, the inflation gauge favored by the Federal Reserve, will be released Friday morning.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 3): ILB Group Bhd (formerly known as Integrated Logistics Bhd) is seeking legal advice after a minority shareholder BT Investment Capital Ltd filed a lawsuit against ILB board members, in an attempt to block an acquisition that could dilute shares owned by existing shareholders.
“ILB wishes to clarify that the Company will always consider corporate proposals involving the businesses of the ILB Group, in the best interest of ILB and all shareholders.
“The Company is seeking legal advice and will announce further developments to the above matter accordingly,” ILB said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Wednesday (Aug 3).
The lawsuit filed by Low Bok Tek on behalf of BT Investment Capital, is aimed at stopping or cancelling the proposed acquisition by ILB of nine parcels of commercial land with shop lots in Seksyen 19, Petaling Jaya, Selangor for RM15.9 million, via the issuance of 37.78 million new shares in ILB.
The other 8 defendants are ILB's Chairman Datuk Karownakaran @ Karunakaran Ramasamy, Chief Executive Officer Tee Tuan Sem, Executive Director Makoto Takahashi; Non-Executive Directors Wan Azfar Wan Annuar, Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Jusoh, Soh Eng Hooi and Jamilah Kamal; and Impian Nuri Sdn Bhd.
BT Investment Capital said the proposed issuance of the new shares will enlarge the number of issued shares to 232.81 million from the current 195.03 million, and would dilute existing shareholding. It contended that it also does not create value for shareholders, as ILB’s earnings per share and any dividends, rights, allotments or other distributions that ILB may declare will be negatively impacted.
ILB’s shares were untraded on Wednesday. The stock last closed at 49 sen, with a market value of RM95.56 million.
Minority shareholders of pasukhas can sue the Board for issuing too many esos shares for directors, misusing power to do private placement at low valuation vs nta but buying quoted penny shares from related parties pulak... Also, for creating share inflation to destroy shareholders' value at the disadvantage/ expense of minority interests
Things are finally looking up after two difficult years, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic that led to a slowdown in the economy. The real estate market is expected to gradually recover now that the country’s borders are open and people are travelling again.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 11): Pasukhas Group Bhd announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Pasukhas Construction Sdn Bhd, has been awarded a contract to undertake concrete substructure works for the head building of the Dexcom Malaysia Factory 3 project in Penang.
The contract worth RM7.08 million was awarded by Exyte Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Pasukhas Group said in a bourse filing on Thursday (Aug 11).
The contract will be effective from Aug 31 to Jan 9 next year.
Pasukhas Construction is principally involved in general contractor activities while Exyte Malaysia is principally involved in provision of construction, installation of facilities and building services as a contractor.
On July 26, Pasukhas Group announced that it had received a RM11.34 million subcontract for electrical works at a water treatment plant in Sabah from Salcon Engineering Bhd.
Pasukhas Group shares closed half a sen or 33.33% higher at two sen, valuing the group at RM38.11 million. The stock has been on a decline since Sept 17 last year, falling by 82.61% from 11.5 sen.
KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13): Buying momentum on Bursa Malaysia is expected to continue next week, with the benchmark index FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) to move above the 1,500-psychological level throughout the week amidst positive market sentiment.
Inter-Pacific Asset Management Sdn Bhd executive director and fund manager Datuk Nazri Khan Adam Khan said the local bourse is making a comeback as it has been moving below the 1,500-psychological mark for some time.
He said sentiment in the market has recovered following the easing of the US inflation rate, which helped ease worries about global economic growth.
Additionally, the better-than-expected gross domestic product in the second quarter of 2022 which saw the economy grow by 8.9% — higher than the consensus expectations of between 5.5% and 6.5% — also contributed to the positive vibe in the market.
“The strong performance is a signal to investors that we will be able to sustain the recovery.
“As long the FBMKLCI stays above 1,500 level, we will be strong. I expect the market will hold steady and the next level will be 1,520 (for support) and 1,530 (resistance),” he told Bernama.
Nazri Khan expects inflation to retreat starting next quarter.
KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): Pasukhas (PASUKGB, 0177, Industrial Products & Services Group of GEM) has been awarded a RM7,084,097 construction contract for Dexcom’s factory in Malaysia.
Pasukhas said in a statement that its wholly-owned subsidiary Pasukhas Construction Sdn Bhd has received a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from Exyte Malaysia Sdn Bhd for the concrete structure works of the main building of the third project of Dexcom Malaysia Plant in Penang. Construction began on August 31 this year, with a completion date of January 9, 2023.
The company pointed out that the notice of winning the bid is in line with the company's strategy to expand its business and increase its turnover.
