1997, 2008, 2012, wedge formation , potential for downturn ?

In Share Investor Magazine, malaysia, this month, one analyst mentioned that the rising wedge formation is a herald of a downturn. It happened in 1997, 2008,and may happen in 2012 ? Any truth, or opinion on this matter ? Thanks.

perhaps it may not happen so soon, but later at the election annoumncement, or the result of Nov 6 US election, or the fiscal cliff that US is facing at end of year. Eclipse , according to a Fong Shui fella is on Nov 13, so maybe a down period ?
