US: Improving job market driving rebound in growth An improving job market and increasing factory production in March contributed to a jump in the US index of leading indicators that signals the pace of economic growth is poised to snap back. The Conference Board’s index, a gauge of the outlook for the next three to six months, rose 0.8%, the most since November, after a 0.5% gain in February, the New York-based group said today. The measure’s 6.1% advance over the past year is the biggest since July 2011. (Bloomberg)

EU: Consumer confidence improves more than expected in April Euro zone consumer confidence rose 0.6 points month-on-month to -8.7 in April, beating market expectations, the European Commission said in its first estimate on Tuesday. Economists polled by Reuters had expected an improvement to 9.0. For the whole of the 28-nation European Union, consumer confidence improved by 0.8 points to -5.8 in April against March, the Commission said. (Reuters)

Alam Maritim Resources Bhd announced that a Hong Leong unit and another firm have agreed to subscribe to 123 million new shares in Alam Maritim for RM166.05 million. Their joint subscription will represent 15.35% of the existing shares in Alam Maritim. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Alam Maritim said it had today entered into a subscription agreement with Associated Land Sdn Bhd and Caprice Capital Intl Ltd for the proposed issuance and allotment of 123 million new ALAM shares, representing 15.35% of the existing paid-up share capital of the company, at an issue price of RM1.35 per unit. Associated Land, an indirect subsidiary of Hong Leong Company (Malaysia) Berhad, will take up 60 million shares while Caprice Capital, controlled by Poh Yang Hong, will take up 63 million shares. Alam Maritim’s share price closed 10 sen or 6.4% higher at RM1.65 on Monday. Trading was halted yesterday and today pending this announcement.
US: Consumer comfort climbs to highest level in eight months Consumer confidence rose last week to its highest level since August as Americans were more upbeat about being able to provide for their families than at any time in six years. The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index climbed to minus 25.4 in the period ended April 20, the second-strongest level since January 2008, from minus 29.1 the prior week. Households’ views of their finances jumped for a second week while gauges of the economy and buying climate also improved. (Bloomberg)
US: Strong durable goods orders buoy growth outlook Orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rose more than expected in March and a measure of business capital spending plans surged, bolstering views of an acceleration in growth in the second quarter. The economy stumbled at the start of the year as abnormally cold weather disrupted activity. Thursday's robust durable goods report was the latest confirmation it was out of hibernation. (Reuters)

US: Consumer sentiment rose in April to nine-month high Consumer confidence rose in April to a nine-month high, showing Americans are growing more upbeat about the economy as the labor market gains traction. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final index of sentiment increased to 84.1 from a four-month low of 80 in March. The median projection in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for 83 after a preliminary April reading of 82.6. (Bloomberg)
