KUALA LUMPUR: Despite having performed their duties for several months since the formation of the unity government, press secretaries of a number of ministers have expressed frustration over delays in payment of their salaries.

Three press secretaries, speaking anonymously to news portal FMT, revealed they were unaware of the reasons behind the payment delay and are growing increasingly concerned.

The lack of income has presented a significant challenge, prompting them to contemplate resigning if the issue persists, FMT reported.

Despite being tempted by higher-paying corporate positions, one press secretary expressed reluctance to abandon their minister midway through their tenure.

Meanwhile, a press secretary who has been in the position for six months disclosed that their colleagues had not received any payment in the current year.

"I only receive allowances for travel. Otherwise, I am relying on my savings, which I estimate can only last until the end of the year.

"I truly enjoy working in the ministry, but I don't think I can continue beyond December without any pay," the aide stated, as quoted by FMT.

According to a statement from one aide, the press secretaries were informed that the salary delay was because their appointment letters were not signed.

The aide claimed that ministry officials had presented them with the necessary paperwork to demonstrate ongoing efforts to facilitate salary payments.

The source added, "I have no idea why there is a delay. I don't even know how much I am going to get paid," emphasising that even the minister was uncertain about the payment amount.

Another press secretary stated that they had not received their salaries and special allowance since the previous year, only receiving travel allowances instead.

The problem of government officials not receiving their payments gained attention in 2018 when former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad acknowledged that some officials had endured a four-month salary deprivation.

The New Straits Times is seeking comments from Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali and the Public Services Department regarding the matter.

Maybe fake press secretaries, and they are not making an impact with their news. Perhaps, they are the one sabotaging.
