ALOR SETAR: Eight ferry trips between Langkawi and Kuala Kedah have been cancelled for the second day in a row due to high waves.

Konsortium Ferrylines Ventures general manager Captain Dr Baharin Baharom said yesterday’s cancellation affected five ferries from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah.

This has impacted a total of 2,013 passengers.

“The cancelled trips from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah were scheduled for 11am, 12.30pm, 2pm, 2.05pm and 2.10pm,” he said in a statement.

“On the Kuala Kedah to Langkawi route, three ferries, carrying 937 passengers, were also affected.

“These trips were set for 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm,” he said in a Bernama report.

Baharin added that the ferry services could not be rerouted to the Kuala Perlis Passenger Terminal due to congestion.

“We contacted the authorities in Kuala Perlis but the terminal was already overwhelmed with passengers and vehicles.

“Therefore, those travelling between Langkawi and Kuala Kedah will need to wait until tomorrow.

“If the weather conditions improve, we will reschedule the cancelled trips,” he said.

On Tuesday, 10 ferry trips for the Langkawi-Kuala Kedah-Langkawi route were cancelled due to 5m-high waves that stormed the waters off Kuala Kedah, affecting almost 4,000 passengers.

The 10 trips involved four ferries from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah with a total of 2,154 passengers and six ferries from Kuala Kedah to Langkawi with 1,791 passengers.
