KLUANG: Police have approved 38 campaign permits in the Mahkota state assembly by-election.

District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said nine permits were granted to Barisan Nasional (BN), and 29 to Perikatan Nasional.

However, BN's permit for a big screen broadcast was rejected as it was not approved by the Kluang district office, he told the New Straits Times, today.

BN applied for nine permits for its speaker's corner sessions, house-to-house visits, talks, flash mobs, and Taqarub programmes, while PN's were for its public talks, house-to-house visits, mobile loudspeaker campaigns, small-group speeches, and busking performances.

There were no campaign-related police reports lodged.

Earlier, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi called for political parties to campaign with decorum and dignity to preserve the 'Johor Way', where unity and respect is always practiced.

The Mahkota by-election is a one-on-one battle between BN's Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and PN's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, also known as Coach Haizan.

Polling day is scheduled for Sept 28 with early voting on Sept 24.
